I need some suggestions for the future.

Edit: title meant to say "once in their lifetime" but you get the drill.

Can't name one, depending on your interest. We're history buffs. So far, our list would include Scotland, York, London, Paris, Greek Islands, Jerusalem and Galilee and Rome. We'd like to revisit every one of those places. If you had a must-see it would be Paris.

I would recommend Spain. Particularly, Barcelona Which is in the area known as Catalan (which like Texas is kinda like its own country.

What about someplace without a lot of tourists?

Many of the places above can fit that quota. I usually take 2-3 international trips per year and they're all off-season and not overrun with tourists. Additionally, you can typically find cheaper airfare and hotels/AirBNB's that way.

Peru is one of the few countries outside NA I have visited so far, and I heartily agree. The massiveness of the Amazon and the Andes leave you in awe. Lima is ok, but Cuzco and the Sacred Valley are of another world. I would love to return And see parts I missed. It is tourism oriented, but definitely not overrun by tourists. It is easy and fairly economical to get there, and domestic flights are cheap.

And as noted, the people are wonderful. Just don't take pictures of someone carrying a baby lamb.

We have visited all the places I mentioned in the off season. It's cheaper, not crowded and we have yet to encounter bad weather. Lucky I guess

Zimbabawe is a bit of an off beat choice, but worthy of consideration. Nice game preserves, the Great Zimbabwe ruin and Victoria Falls

That is the biggest tourist scam in the Sacred Valley and surrounding areas. Someone in native dress carrying a baby lamb approaches you. You take a photo of them or with them. Then you find out it is an expensive photo op. A few tell you the price ahead of time.

Fascinating, thanks for the info. Pray tell, what happens if they neglected to mention it will cost money up front and as a result you refuse to pay up?

Cook Islands if you enjoy beauty and tranquility in a setting where nearly everyone is a professing Christian and attends church 7 nights a week. Yes, there really is such a place

Rent a houseboat/barge and spend the summer slow boating the canals in France. I can stop off in a small village for lunch, picnic or prepare something onboard. Stopping for an afternoon to paint along the banks is a favorite pastime for me. Hone your culinary, wine appreciation and language skills at a pedestrian pace in a pastoral setting. It's not for everyone, but if you've ever dreamed of immersing yourself in real French culture, this is it.

If you are a big nature lover, I'd recommend Costa Rica. If you are interested in South America and like mountains or beaches, I'd recommend Colombia. Rome is probably my favorite European city. Incredible if you enjoy history because there is a ton there, both religious and secular.

Rome is so crowded with tourists, though. Agree, amazing history there and nearby.

Granted, York is not a country unless you are talking to someone there and they are quick to point out that they are not part of England, they are Yorkshire. Likewise Galillee and Jerusalem, both Israel but two different kinds of places. Same with Paris and Rome. They pretty much stand alone. I could say the same about USA. Bar Harbor, Maine and Santa Fe, New Mexico share little in common other than they are both in the the USA.

You are truly in a "foreign" country because of the language, it is different than the UK, and you will walk in history that you have only read about.
Plus the women are beautiful, the food incredible, the rail system a great way to get around and there is a joie de vivre that is everywhere. You can just feel it.
The sidewalk cafes are bustling right at sunset, and everyone dresses nicely.
No shorts or t-shirts.
The French enjoy life, and living it well.
The scenery is like living in a postcard.

Try Asia. Thailand is tons of fun but China is interesting too I live in a city of 4 million people and in 4 weeks have seen one other white person.. Lots of history and culture and a dollar goes a long way.

The capital of Laos, Veintain, is more like a village than a big city. Great food and shopping.
