3:59.4, the first under 4:00.0. One of those whose name and accomplishment is known by everybody who has run middle and long distances.

Met him years ago before a 10k in the Atlanta area. Very nice man, took the time to shake my hand and ask how my training had been ... even though I was even then obviously a middle-aged guy running more to hang with friends and get a t-shirt.

Well done, Sir Roger. And thank you.

Could google but...

Wasn't he a med student when he broke 4?
“Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws in the first place.” (The Law, p.6) Frederic Bastiat

He was. As I recall, he quit competitive racing after that 1954 season. He beat John Landy later that year (after the first sub-4) in the first race involving two who had gone under 4. (They both did in that race as well.)

Definitely an idol when I was young since I ran the mile and two mile in school. But like you said, he retired from running and loved the difference he made in the medical field. His priorities are impressive. Still, I wonder what he could have done on the track!
