Spent last weekend hosting our granddaughter out on the place while her parents were out of town. Placing her on the back of a horse for her first ride (at age 3) got me nostalgic for all of the horses we've had out here over the last 98 years.
I put together a little photo journal of it, and hope you "city slickers" enjoy it.

Great pictures. Had rancher friends close to that area (close by west Texas standards) who averaged running one cow per 100 acres.

That sounds about right!

For much of my childhood people ran sheep out here, but with the end of the federal wool subsidy they moved to cattle. Almost no one runs sheep anymore.
The largest sheep ranch in Texas was/is out in Pecos County. The Hat A Ranch was at one time 240 sections (square miles). It was founded by Arthur Anderson (not the accountant) then divided into three ranches upon his death.
The other two were sold off, but one remains.
They removed all of their sheep about 5 years ago and now run cows.
The Texas Sheep and Goatraisers Association was founded in Del Rio by Arthur Anderson and another Pecos County sheepman.
