#1 I Will Survive v #4 I'm Your Boogie Man

#7 We Are Family v #6 Stayin Alive

FYI KC's Boogieman tied with Lipps Inc's Funky Town but moved on because of being the higher seed (my rules and yes, making them up as I go)

Old man yelling out cloud notes:

Give me this music over most (yes some good stuff) modern day rap any day. Sure there was Push Push in the Bush and plenty of suggestive lyrics, but no one had cuss like a drunk sailor and degrade women constantly.

End rant

Hip Hop detractors used to deride it as simplistic because all you had to do, in their eyes, was rhyme to a beat. There's a lot not quite true about that, since hip hop at that time required mechanical skill to (re)mix hooks from previous music in a creative way, and most of the higher caliber (!) stuff had lyrics borne from street reality. Harsh, violent, vulgar, degrading - it had a vision and a point.

My daughter was playing some stuff the other day that sounded like mumbling and grunting. I've worked on Merzbow projects, so ambient and noise is not a closed door to me. This, though, sounded like someone was burning studio time. After 30 seconds, I would have cut in the talkback and said, "Ya'll know I'm rolling tape? Go ahead and start any time now...".

I have a bluetooth speaker mounted on my bike, and play music while I pedal around. I was rolling to some Atlantic Starr, Gloria Loring, Phil Collins, and Luther Vandross the other day and thought, "Man, so when my kid is older and reminiscing, is she gonna recall some dude grunting into a mic? I'm lucky!".

Boogeyman isn't even KC's best song. I feel like I've been cheated.

Allow me to assist--here's their best one. It was also one of my wedding songs in 1999, 25 years after its release:

And yes, disco rules.

My thread my seeds !

Honestly would do it differently - came up with a the first power house dozen and picked the 8 seeds.

Could have picked a different Donna Summer song as well.

Shouldn't of of left off Thelma Houston & Knock on Wood.

This playoff has allowed me to share a secrete and lift the shame of enjoying trash disco nights back in the day.

Thanks for acknowledging that. Here is the original version by Eddie Floyd.

The video is from an afternoon tv show called "Where the Action Is" later shortened to "Action ". The guys clowning around are members of the group, Paul Revere & the Raiders where they acted as co-hosts.

The back-up band on the record is Booker T & the MGs which featured the great Steve Cropper on guitar and Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass. This group was featured as the Blues Brothers Band in the movie of the same name.

In those days you had Motown soul (Supremes, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, etc) and the Memphis sound that these guys laid down backing Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd et al.

The song was written by Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper
Good stuff!

Wrong KC song, no mention of Disco Inferno in your top 8 thread, and Stayin' Alive and We Are Family not being the top two seeds (and the two finalists) all makes me want to break things. Nevertheless, I'm feeling magnanimous today and as such will cast my vote the same as NoBSU above, with Stayin' Alive deserving to be the ultimate winner as arguably the most iconic Disco song of the 70s.

Boogie Man. Stayin' Alive.

About 20 years ago I was in my office on the 27th floor on a Friday afternoon and started hearing KC & The Sunshine Band songs. I figured someone in an office close by was being too silly, but then I saw the stream of ants on the street below heading for Barney Allis Plaza. Yep, a Friday afternoon concert. Followed up by Kool and the Gang.

Best Friday afternoon I'd had in awhile.

Kool & the Gang is playing this weekend at The Wildflower Festival in Richardson. And hell yes I'll be there.

Berry Gordy, Motown founder, writer, producer but mainly an eye for talent.

Gordy was the king of the Motown. Steve Cropper and Booker T. & the MGs were the leaders and back up band for the Memphis scene.
