for those with kids in college, what are some of the laptops purchased for their use?
I know some tech but not savvy enough to walk in a pick out what is most practical, without some research.
So I will start here. We have a high school senior and she wants one soon to start school & scholly applications.
She has only mentioned a MacBook to us, as HER pick.
Any feedback is much appreciated!

What will she major in. Art, etc leans Mac. Business leans PC. You can get by with either. There is a premium cost for the Mac. You can get a solid Dell much cheaper.

Machines don't get obsolete fast anymore so it's more just what you want (assuming it's not a gaming machine). Office isn't as good on the Mac but it works.

My son is heading off to BU this fall. He wants to replace the Mac Book Air with the one that is coming out in September. He loves his Mac.

Business will likely be her first choice as of now. Engineering could be a distant second.
*We all have iPhones but we have zero utilization with Mac computers.
We have always used a Windows desktop around here.

My incoming freshman is bringing a Lenovo Yoga 920. 2n1 that's small, light, and she can use a pen on it.

Whatever you do, get her the full support plan. You'll be playing network admin from a distance when things go wrong.

Love my iphone but will never pay the premium for Macbook

If major is film, advertising, graphics there may be reasons for Mac as those industries use them. Also if she want to get in with hipster crowd - then iphone, Mac, & a special order Starbucks.

My last laptop about a year ago was an Asus - i7, 16G Ram, 1080P screen with touchscreen. around $1,000.00 - I use this for business and personal - able to use a very resource intensive program like photoshop

Thanks for feedback so far,
I think I remember at one time BU alumni or Bear Foundation members get student/faculty incentive pricing thru bookstore. Does anyone confirm?

We bought Macs for both our kids at the BU bookstore. Their Mac prices were less than we found anywhere else. They also have support services there.

The business profs are going to tend to be Windows users. There can be minor issues with Excel. I teach some classes where the students have to do Excel and there's sometimes issues with the Mac's formatting and with the Mac not having all the bells and whistles. The latter has gotten better over the years. I can remember students having to go to Google and learn how to download Solver to work on the Mac. That kind of stuff doesn't seem to happen anymore, but it will often look just a bit different (I think it's part of Microsoft's anti-Mac strategy).

There's nothing she can't get around, though, if she really wants to use a Mac.

Buy her a Mac and then boot camp windows etc on to the Mac. Macs now use intel processors so boot camp the Mac which will allow dual boot into either windows or Mac OS. Would think whoever you buy the Mac can do the partition and install boot camp. Any tech can then do winders.
