I'm a grocery store brat so he should appreciate the humor. My dad had a basketball goal in the back storeroom. When I shot an airball, the ball would hit the wall and knock butter off the dairy case on the other side. Box forts. Butcher accidents. All great development of humor and character.Wichitabear said:

I forgot one category - best closet alcoholic story. That is a dated topic now that stores have full liquor departments. But the 70s were a bit more creative in finding things with alcohol.

Working in one of my dads stores after college. Couldn't keep cooking wine on the shelf. Kept an eye on it and finally saw the culprit. 50ish year old man came wobbling in and bought all I had. What made me crazy was he used his food stamps! I decided if he was going to use my tax dollars to buy his wine I was going to make some money! I doubled the price of the cooking wine and waited till he came in. He walked up to the shelf and started grabbing bottles then paused, looked closely at the price, shrugged his shoulders and proceeded to buy all I had!

I remember a checker commenting that a woman must be doing a lot of baking because she was buying a dozen bottles of vanilla (the good stuff back in the 70s that had less alcohol then 2/3 beer). My dad just shook his head to stop the conversion.Jpgrocery_bf said:

Man, I did not think of the food stamp category. This one guy keep sending in his kids with a one dollar food stamp each to buy one packet of Kool-Aid. They were what a dime back then and you gave change back in coin. My brother called all four of them up to the register at once. Took the cost of four packets out of one foodstamp dollar and sent the kool aid, smaller amount of change, and three food stamp dollars with them out the door. No six pack or cigarettes that night.
One summer night in 1972, about an hour before closing a dour faced old woman came to the front and said there was a dog in the meat display. Sure enough, I go back to the display and there was a Jack Russell just ripping the **** out of several ground beef packages.
I grabbed the dog, carried him through the back of the store and released him out the back door. After cleaning up the damaged goods I went back to my usual closing duties.
A few minutes later someone else came to the front and said there was a dog in the meat display. Apparently he had figured out that if he stood on the pressure pad, the door would open.
This time I carried him with a jacket draped over his head to some RR tracks about 2 blocks from the store and shooed him away.
Ten minutes later, here he comes again. This time I loaded him into the car and drove him to the far side of town and dropped him off. I laughed to myself about him getting back to the store ahead of me.
Smart dog.
If I didn't already have one I probably would have kept him.

My dad caught a 16 year-old and 15 year-old stealing couple of cans of Skoal. He was a store manager with a chain then. 100% prosecutions or loss of your job, so he called in the boys names to the city police for pickup. The state trooper from a town over just happened to be at the city police station. The trooper heard the names and volunteered to transport his SONS to the police station for prosecution. My father said that it was the most violent handcuffing and tossing of suspects into a cruiser that he had ever seen. The trooper slams his boys unto his trunk. Cuffed them tight. Banged their heads on the doorframe and bounced them around his back seat yelling, "you want to act like criminals, then I am going to treat you like criminals."
