I've always been a huge Tyson fan. Obviously, I'm not a fan of everything he's done. In a sport that rewards violence, he deliberately brought violence outside the ring to innocent people.
That said, his story is one of a shy, bullied kid from the ghetto who was nurtured into one of the world's best athletes, yes, but also a person of worth who grew to respect himself against all odds. It's a further story of, when that nurturing force left, others ghoulishly sucked out everything his life had, then threw away the empty shell when it had nothing left.
Listening to Mike Tyson talk nowadays is to hear wisdom from a man who understands that the scared kid, the glorified champion, the criminal, and the pigeon keeper are all the same man. None of them are the real Mike, and none of them have any excuses for their behavior.
While it's tough to advocate deliberate participation in a sport where the goal is to hit another person until their body shuts down, the science of boxing is the ultimate human discipline requiring mastery of both the physical and the mental. Mike Tyson never reached his true potential as a fighter, but in losing out on that gave the world a lesson in the human condition.
