He actually was a scholarship football player for FSU back in the 50s. He was Lee Corso's roomate as well in college.
Back to the career he was known for. I really liked that sitcom Evening Shade in late 80s-early 90s set in some fictional small town in Arkansas. I havent seen it in reruns really since it went off the air and who knows I may not think it funny if I watched reruns of it today. I thought it was a good show at the time.

In 1974 BU was playing Florida St in Tallahassee (back when FSU drew 25K fans in a 40K seat Doak Campbell Stadium, BID). BU came out flat and trailed FlaSt 17-0 at halftime. FlaSt was honoring Burt Reynolds at the half (this was about the time The Longest Yard came out), and instead of the usual 15-20 minute halftime performance, the ceremony dragged on for 30 minutes or more. BU was forced to wait it out in the visitors' locker room, so Teaff and crew took the opportunity to fire up the team during the delay. BU came out and blew FlaSt out in the second half to win 21-17, then beat Arkansas the following week to start the championship run.
In the early 60's he played Quint Asper on Gunsmoke, the half white/half Cherokee blacksmith

That's cool. I didn't realize that. It's not one of those shows I remember a lot of details about. I admit though I enjoyed the show it wasn't one I watched every episode. I just looked up the town. Pretty cool a town of 400 or so became the setting of a sitcom. I had forgotten a main comedic theme until I just looked it up that Reynold's played the head football coach of towns HS and they notoriously never won a game.
Burt's role as Quint in the mid-late 60s era of Gunsmoke is highly underrated.

I just ran an errand and ran into my friend from Evening Shade. He said the shows developer proposed Corning, AR which is near her hometown, but the network did not like that name and opted for Evening Shade.PartyBear said:

Burt was always a good sport and quite self-deprecating in public. The first time he hosted the Tonight Show as a fill in for Johnny, his ex-wife who he hadn't spoken to in 6 years was one of the guests. Of course she mentioned his then current lady friend, Dinah Shore, who was 20 years older than Burt.
Who else can you think of who would walk into that situation just to curry a few laughs?
