When he retired word was he had taught 25% of all students who had ever attended BU.

This is a year of deaths. I took Packard, oddly, he's one of the few professors I remember.

I remember Dr. Packard as well. Amazing in that I perceived him as being up there in years back in the early 80s. He definitely made physics interesting.

I had Packard and remained friends until his later years. He used to come into my business and visit. Good guy. I wasn't one of his KOT's but I liked him anyway.

In that subject, the great Kurt Kaiser, former leader of the BRH choir passed away in December. Another great Baylor Bear!

Had him in one of his giant classes my freshman year. He stunned me by remembering my name across campus later that semester. I will never forget his opening lecture: "I get fired up for physics" as his textbook opens in flames. One of Baylor's great teaching professors.

How old was he? I thought he was in his late 60s/early 70s back when I took his class in 85.

He was 94.

I spent easily 7, maybe 8 hours perfecting a Dr. Packard impression.

Don't let that sound derogatory, he was amazing in intellect and teaching ability and it was my way of learning something he explained in a lecture.

I can still see him smiling at me, over a quarter century later.

RIP, Dr. Packard.

"Packard Physics" is a phrase that passed into my family's lexicon.
One of my brothers in law is a high IQ savant who has his PhD from Baylor in both Physics and Mathematics.
My wife (still highly intelligent in most areas) took Dr. Packard's class as a poli-sci undergrad.

He made a potentially inaccessible subject interesting for generations of students who were largely in it for the necessary credit. That in itself is a monumental achievement.

Sorry to hear of his passing.

Today also marks the 12 anniversary of the passing of Elmo Vanderolf.
For those too young, Elmo was the 7foot-1inch Russian Bar Tender at the once famous, It'll Do Lounge on South 11th Street. Elmo always greeted you with a smile, despite his English not being very good.
For those of us from 1967 forward, Elmo was a fixture with his Blue Ribbon beers.
Elmo worked at the "Do" till it's final closing for I-35 expansion.
To his loyal customers... he will never be forgotten.
A True Baylor Legend in his own time.

He must have aged fast! I thought that he was 24 when I took his class in 55.

At that time he made up his test questions in his head as he drove in. On one question, nobody could solve it. He came in the next day and apologized, saying that he hadn't given us enough information to solve the problem.

I remember Dr. Packard because he was the only professor who, as he walked through the student union building, would sit and chat with us.

Sad to see this news. It seemed like everyone took Packard Physics when I was at BU. Like it was a required class. I enjoyed it. One of the few non major profs I remember and enjoyed.
