What, me worry?

It warped my brain and I never recovered from the sarcasm.

Oh man. I never missed an issue of MAD, Cracked, and Crazy (which I now see ended in 83) as a kid in elementary school. So many of the old American institutions are slowly fading away. The times they are a changing.

Seldom bought an issue of Mad, but read many issues at the magazine rack in the grocery store while my mom shopped.

Potrzebie.

When I was in 5th-7th grade in Corsicana, I would buy my copies of Mad at our neighborhood convenience store at the intersection of 37th Street and 2nd Avenue. I still have a few of them.

The stuff we read on the racks in the back of the store were the magazines with stories about how Paul McCartney died in a car wreck and the Beatles replaced him with a double.

My Mother threw away my valuable Mad Magazine collection while I was away at Baylor. Still haven't forgiven her.

A few years ago, I bought all of the copies of MAD from the years when my brother's were 10-13 year olds and gave them the collections as a Christmas gifts. We're in our 40's and 50's now. Spent the rest of Christmas reading them and giggling like kids.

Pointed wit, skewered hypocrites, humorous takes on everyday life in the 60's will be the MAD memories for me. I really liked the movie 'remakes' from popular films of the day.

One of my favorite hypocritical digs was used on my wife soon after we were married. We bought a used car sans modern conveniences and while driving it onto our street for the first time yelled, "Quick roll up the windows", "I want the neighbors to think we have air-conditioning."

Long road trips in the backseat and scout camp were made bearable because of MAD. Thank you Alfred.

Started with "Cracked", moved on to "MAD", then found "National Lampoon".

Frankly, the Internet has killed subversion. You used to have to go looking for it. It took an intellectual. Nowadays, idiots can find it express delivered. There's a lot more idiots, too!
