I live in Houston but am in Waco quite a bit for business. Would appreciate recs from Wacoans for decent lunch/dinner dining spots. I am NOT trying to start a Bari's back and forth feud. Wouldn't call myself a foodie but really enjoy good meals and beverages whether hole in wall or higher end. Interested in trying local places.

I like most all types of food with exception of Indian. Few comments/questions:

  • I hit Double R a few weeks ago for lunch. Thought the thin patty burger was outstanding but the place was filthy. I'll probably give it another shot but man they could invest in a deep cleaning!
  • other burger recs? Took the family to Georges before TSU game and CB basket was still damn good.
  • good mexican and margs? Personally do not like the Waco Ninfas or their margs - where is local non chain go to?
  • any one tried the new pizza place on Bosque?
  • any good casual locally owned recs? best hole in wall restaurant?
  • sushi???
  • Been to Diamond Backs and 135. 135 was after last game at Floyd Casey so its very hazy need to try again. Any other higher end spots?

  • what is a decent adult bar (i.e. Waco professionals) to get cocktails aside from crickets or Indigo? Went to Muddle a few weeks ago... very rough crowd. Hit Chapter 11 out of lack of other ideas. It was not the late night BU crowd for sure....

  • Appreciate any insights!

  • other burger recs? Kitok's on 18th street. It's actually a Korean restaurant (allegedly) but their burgers are great. Get the oriental fries. You won't be disappointed. Also Dave's Burger Barn in Belmead makes a mighty fine burger. Took the family to Georges before TSU game and CB basket was still damn good.
  • good mexican and margs? Personally do not like the Waco Ninfas or their margs - where is local non chain go to? Casa De Castillo on Sanger.
  • any one tried the new pizza place on Bosque?
  • any good casual locally owned recs? Believe it or not, one of the best Chicken Fired Steaks around are at Catfish King on South Valley Mills Drive. If you like catfish, it's good as well. Another interesting place is The Coffee Shop in McGregor. The typically have a buffet, or you can order from the menu. best hole in wall restaurant? IMO that would be Griff's at the corner of Wortham Bend Road and China Spring Hwy (FM1637) in China Sprng. Very good "common" food like burgers, hamburger steaks, chicken fried, and etc... Popular lunch place for all the farmers, ranchers, and workers in the area.
  • sushi??? Thinking real hard. No, I've got nothing..............

Headed to Waco later this week.... should I take it by the lack of responses that decent dining options are truly this limited?

don't know, but on my recent visit I found Diamondbacks to be completely underwhelming. big city prices for pretty average food.

Bularry - I'm batting 50% and after last experience I'll head out to 135 if want steak. Steak was actually much better than experience after the NW State game this year.

While wrapping up our dinner at the bar at Diamond Backs about 10:15p on a Th night in early Dec. we signal the bartender that we would like another cocktail. He tells my biz partner( another BU alum from Austin) and I - 'bar is closed'. We got no last call.... nada. Perplexed we asked why they would not tell us. He says ' at steakhouses when the kitchen closes the bar closes'. Not in my neck of the woods but alrighty then.

Waco is blessed with many local favorites, though not as many in some of your categories as in previous years. Another good local Mexican restaurant that serves a decent margarita is El Conquistador, with two locations -- one on Waco Drive and the other in Bellmead, though I think the one on Waco Drive has a better atmosphere. Surprisingly, a good burger can be found at the restaurant at the Hippodrome -- on the second floor above the remodeled theater on Austin Avenue. It's a good place to eat and relax, and is unusually quiet for a restaurant, which can be welcome if you wish to do more than read your e-mail. The menu is American, but has all the basics, and the portions and tastes should suit most any patron. If you are wearing jeans and want to kick back, your already know about George's. Good local pizza: try Poppa Rollo's and like George's, they have two locations -- with the second site for each restaurant to be found on Estates Drive at either end of the same strip shopping center that is fronted by Bush's Chicken --located on Hewitt Drive which runs between Woodway and Hewitt. For atmosphere, Poppa Rollo's on Valley Mills has some interesting secret rooms. Ask for directions to the bar, and don't stop when you run into the wall. I need to confirm the spelling of some names, and I'll get back to you with some other suggestions. Do you do breakfast?
If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

Thank you DesertSoul. Haven't been to either el conquistador in 20+yrs! Will give it and hippodrome a shot. I don't eat breakfast often but I love a good one so pls share your favorites.

One thing I'll add. You reference a "pizza place on Bosque", which is Moroso. It is hands down the best run restaurant in Waco. It's not a place that attempts to be schmancy like 135 Prime, but when you walk in, you feel like you are in a well-run and well-designed restaurant in Dallas/Austin/Houston. Pizza is great and authentic, and the owner pays attention to detail like no other. It's basically the only place that my wife and I go to dinner when we go on dates.

FWIW, I was not paid to make this ringing endorsement, although my opinions are 100% for sale to the highest bidder.

Not sure if you are still checking this, but my favorite place to eat in Waco is Nick's Portafino on Austin Ave.

On the weekend, reservations are suggested. Fantastic fish and italian. I love the house dressing on the salad.

The mussells in white wine / garlic sauce is fantastic. You have to request that specific sauce for it though.

Everything I have eaten there has been very good. Nice romantic dinner place.

Also, the pizza is very good too.

Best Mexican and best hole in the wall are the same as far as I am concerned. Rufi's at 25th & Lasker. Outstanding Michoacan style. Mom, son & daughter run it. Fantastic hand made tortillas, they make some of their own cheeses. Lots of things you can't get anywhere else. Be sure to check hours for dinner - not always the same. I go a lot more for lunch. It is BYOB.

Moroso's wood-fired pizzeria on Bosque is great. The pizza is authentic old country style. The arancini are also good, although just a little small. It's the quintessential Sicilian appetizer. Unique and excellent salads and a decent list of wines for a small place. Stylish and pleasant. The pizza is Neapolitan, but the appetizers and desserts lean toward Sicilian.

Sergio's is good Mexican seafood, downtown on Austin between 6th and 7th, but is only open on Friday and Saturday night. The plato pacifico with mahi-mahi is to die for if you like spicy. Also the chipotle salmon. It is BYOB. Family run and the service can be slow sometimes, but good people.
