I like blended scotch. A lot of expensive single malts lack character. Similar to patron tequila.
You drink scotch like a peasant, Larry. Blended scotch is unapproachable.

I admit I'm not a sophisticated scotch drinker

But I like JW black quite a bit. And I'd drink bourbon ahead of most any single malt I've had. And I have had many

I'm messing with you man. Drink what you like. Even if it happens to be blended peasant juice.
no worries, i'm secure in my alcohol choices. you can't offend me!

It is hard to beat 12 year-old Glenmorangie Nectar D'Oro - 3 fingers over an ice ball is always a great way to unwind from the day!

I liked the dOre a lot better when it was under $60. It is up over $80 now, isn't it?

Big fan of Glenlivet's Master Distiller's Reserve but you can only buy it at certain Duty Free shops, next would be the 15 yr old French Oak Reserve. Very smooth.

The Balvenie Double Wood 12, a Speyside, is my house/everyday drinking Whisky. I like the Balvenie Port Wood 17 occasionally.

Drinking more Bourbon than Scots Whisky these days.

I have JW Blue Label right now and really enjoy it. In the past I've really liked Balvenie 14 Year Caribbean Cask and Tullibardine 225 single malts.

Justin Wilson was asked, "What kind of wine goes with <dish>?"
He replied, "What kine wine you like?".

There's no wrong answer. Visit a bar that has a good selection, and taste a few. Not all at once, obviously, because the character from one tends to linger. It will help you narrow down your preferences.

"Preferences" doesn't mean "always has to be". It just forms a good place to start.

My nectar is always Johnny Walker Black. It's orange, harsh, and bites like battery acid. To me, this is high compliment. I enjoy everything about it. I've tasted all manner of others, and enjoyed most. To me, single malts tend to be too sweet and candied by and large.

Macallen is another brand that I enjoy. Not my favorite, again, but an enjoyable change of pace.

Glenlivet is my go to scotch, but Dalwhinnie is my special occasion brand. Great stuff.

Depends on how much you spend. Highlands (Highland Park, Glenmorangie) and Speysides(Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Macallan) are going to be your more mainstream, what you expect from a scotch. Blends (Johnnie Walker, Chivas) will be your easiest drinking overall for the price.

Barnett's Public House just started a Whiskey Society and are doing tasting events for only $25 once a month.

I really like the peaty whiskies from Islay, in particular ones that have been finished in bourbon barrels and/or sherry casks. Gives them some sweetness to balance out the smoke. Some of my favorites are:

Lagavulin 16
Ardbeg Uigeadail
Bunnahabhain Toiteach
Laphroaig Triple Wood
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Glenlivet Old Ballantruan (peated Speyside malt)
Kilchoman Machir Bay
Compass Box Peat Monster (blend)

Not all of those have the sweetness I described above, but they all seem to me to have some level of added complexity. Also, I think I may have just broken spell check.

Haha. Perhaps? I have to say, I don't run into too many people with the same taste in Scotch that I have.

I generally pefer Glenlivit 18 over most. But a close second is Aberlour. The 18 is available again after a couple year hiatus. Those two are very good scotch whisky. Both of those run $120-$140.

We just returned from Scotland this summer where we toured Blair Athol Distillery in the Highlands. It's fairly unknown because they do not export their 12-year old single malt. Brought two bottles home and drank about half of one Saturday night. Very smooth. They do export some to Johnnie Walker who blends it in their Red.

I generally enjoy scotch but would readily admit that I have not thoroughly "educated" myself about it. Craft beer is my usual indulgence, and I'm far more well-versed there. Nonetheless, I have been planning to reward myself with a fine scotch upon final payment of all student debt. I'm willing to pay upwards $500 to $1,000 (but probably not beyond that range). Do y'all have any recommendations for something around that level?

Also, is there a particular scotch "review" sort of website, magazine, or publication you like?

I think you'd get more bang for your buck getting 3-4 scotches at $100-200.

Probably the tastiest I've had was JW Blue, which I think is typically around that range. Is that pretty much what you would recommend?

I prefer single malts that are relatively peaty. I like Talisker and Springbank, either of which you can find at $100 or less a bottle.

I like Springbreak too, PCBeach was a blast.
Winning by cheating is just as impressive as winning fairly, probably even more so. Your opponent was better than you in every way, and you beat them with your brain.

MacAllan 25 is what I would buy. And have $ left over for something else.

Not a big fan of blends. But that's me. I LOVE Lagavulin and Laphroaig.
