I liked the bell but I liked the bear cub on the field even more.
that sadly will never happen as it is against the law now to have a non-domisticated animal there. Although the term is losely defined. Last time I checked we never domesticated buffalos nor longhorns
Point taken. I was not aware of any such law. Is that Texas or federal?

But technically, if people eat them (beef & bison), then they are domesticated animals. Don't the LSU Tigers sometimes take their live mascot to football games. Auburn has their beautiful war eagle, although not a mascot.
federal is my understanding. The tigers enclosure is connected to the stadium at LSU so its "there" on game days.

I went to baseball camps at LSU.

I don't remember the tiger habit being connected to the football stadium.

how long ago did you go? And sorry not attached but just across the street so fans can easily go see the tiger on their way to the stadium. Wish we built a small game day enclosure outside mclane. Would be awesome

Am I imagining things or was that at one point discussed at the time McLane was in its infancy stages? I thought there were plans for a game day habitat for Joy and Lady.
You are right that was discussed...it was even marked on some of the plans they were passing around on the internet at the time.

But it just seemed to go no where....I don't remember why a habitat at McLane was axed.

The article Baylor posted said clearly that Baylor is going to bring in replacement black bears....probably young rescue bears. I'm sure they have to be careful who they invite to the party.

I would be happy if Baylor would take the one that occasionally comes onto my property, but he's old and weighs about 350 pounds, so I doubt Baylor's interested!!

I think I remember that they stopped taking bears to games and keep them away from the stadium because the noise upset the bears. There may have been a law that applied (although as noted above, many schools don't follow it) and there was complaining about it for years, but I think the school chose to stop because the bears' care givers ultimately advised against it.

And the bear habitat is a highly accreditated zoo that the school has spent a ton on, so I doubt they are going to do away with it. Plus the bears have a ranch they go to every once and a while to roam.

What happened to a chamber man getting a new bear every 2 years of so? Did we do away with that? I thought we always had a cub on campus, too
We used to get a cub every 2 years? I have never heard of us having a cube on campus in my 30 years of life beyond when we get a new bear cub to replace a previous one

I could be wrong, but that's what I recall. (It's been a couple decades now). We always had a cub and an adult bear. I was told we almost always had to get rid of the cubs once they reached adulthood because of the risk. Every once in a while we'd keep one that was good especially docile well I it adulthood.

I wasn't in Chamber, but that's what I was told. I'm the 90s I think we always had a cub and an adult. Back then the cub would often attend the home games.

If I recall, the reason we don't take the bears to the games anymore is because it would jeopardize the zoo status that the Bear Habitat has. I think in the write up, they said that Joy and Lady were the last to go to a game. I do remember Chance, the bear before Joy and Lady, was a little on the wild side.

We haven't done that in 20 years.

Student in the black hat needs to take a better pursuit angle. Probably can't bring down the runner, but at least he would grade out higher.

Aw man!

Thanks for closing the loop.

That stirred my memory: in the 1980s we had at least one each cub & adult. For obvious reasons, it was the cub that was taken to football games. I think we had 3 total.

Close but not quite. The frat that owned had a party where a student died from alcohol poisoning and was dismissed from campus for a bit.

And @lagunabear is correct that there were new mascots every two years before a request was made that we keep the bears for the entirety of their life.

Lastly original renderings for the McLane had a bear habitat in the end zone with the berm for game days. I was told by the lead bear trainer from chamber at the time peta had a major fit about it and so it was axed but there are still possible considerations for an on-site beat habitat.

I thought one the Sigma Chi's dates died after the event. Regardless, that was the last straw and they got the boot.

I did the Bear Bell in the Steele days. It was hot AF and we didn't get to ring it very much.

Back about 2010 the government bowing to PETA protests made a rule that schools can't bring non domesticated animal mascots to games. You can bring a cow, buffalo, ponies, etc… but no wild animals. Stupid rules.

Do hope when the new cubs arrive at Baylor they do bring them out to a pre-game introduction. I'm just glad our one lady president didn't kill the whole Bears program.

I'm from an era when there was a bell and a cub.

I remember talking to one of the chamber guys about how much work it was to take care of the cub. That little guy could get into stuff and tear sh!+ up with his claws. Once they were approaching the 2-year zone (especially) they were VERY tough to handle and required a lot of care.

Regarding the bell - I always thought it was kinda lame. Who rings a bell to celebrate something anyway? A ship? A Catholic church? It never made sense to me and you could barely hear it anyway. Running the flags around the end-zone is a good enough tradition IMO. Next you'll want to bring back the "Go Bears Go" chants and "Mic Man."

I can imagine a bear being VERY tough. I mean even a dog can be a handful. A wild bear whose instinct is to kill and eat must have been a nightmare. Still I thought it was cool to have a bear on campus.

I agree. Do NOT bring the bell back. It's kind of high schoolish.

Joy was born Jan. 27, 2001, at West Coast Game Park in Bandon, Oregon. From the moment she arrived on the Baylor campus as a rambunctious four-month-old cub, Joy captured the hearts of Baylor students, alumni, faculty and staff and more than 250,000 campus visitors a year. Joy loved the visits from schoolchildren from throughout Central Texas and generations of families, students and alumni, who shared in the thrill of meeting Joy and Lady and learning about the Bears' unique mission of stewardship, education and conservation.

With her sister named after former Baylor First Lady Sue "Lady" Sloan, wife of the University's 12th President Robert B. Sloan Jr., Joy also shared a name with another Baylor First Lady, Joy Reynolds, wife of Baylor's 11th president, Dr. Herbert H. Reynolds. Joy was officially introduced to her namesake on the front lawn of the Reynolds' residence in June 2001, with her first bear trainer Tyler Sellers, B.S. '02, and bear coordinator Ryan Fitzhugh, B.B.A. '02, by her side. The little cub then visited Pat Neff Hall to meet Dr. Sloan, who came prepared with three bottles of special formula. Curling up like an infant in the president's arms, Joy drained the bottles in a matter of minutes.
