Bell was probably the best player in the Roberts-Steele-Morriss era.

We would finish the season with 3 blowout losses.

2007 was 3 steps back as we went 3-9 and were not competitive in conference.
Unfortunately even with Bell we lost an embarrassing game to Army at home, played terrible in Seattle against Wizzou, and only scored 7 in a loss to TCU at home.

That Bobby Ross coached Army team was not good at all except for a 2 week span.

The week before we played them, Army had A&M sweating bullets - less than 10 yards away from beating the Ags in the Alamodome at the buzzer. Right down to the wire from what I remember..

Wazzu game we got screwed by the refs on the same day that OU got jobbed up in Oregon. TCU game we were up 7-0 at halftime against a very stout Frogs D and played them toe-to-toe. Should have won 2/3 of those games for sure.

I remember the entrance for the TCU game, Guy led the team onto the field riding a motorcycle to Enter Sandman. A far cry from the vegetarian predecessor.

I'm thankful for his contributions, but the staff got really lazy during recruiting by the end, which led to 2007 and late 2006 after the Bell injury.

People can say whatever they want about Guy Morriss the coach. But he's genuinely a good and decent man. I covered the Bears for the Lariat in 2005 and 2006, and I had nothing but positive experiences with him during those two years.

I'll always be a GuyMo fan.

Morriss should have never been here in 2007. If they weren't going to extend him (and in hindsight, it's good that they didn't), they should have fired him after 2006. The 2007 season was a lame duck debacle. Everyone knew he was gone after that season.

Idk. We were a few breaks away from being 7-4 in '05. Was definitely an upgrade over Steele.
Our defense in 2005 was the best defensive unit we had between the Teaff years and 2019. That defense was legitimately good. Unfortunately, we weren't very consistent offensively that season -- a problem compounded by Brent Pease's idiotic decision to bench Bell in favor of Terrance Parks.

Morriss' 2005 and 2006 teams were so close in so many games. We had a lot of heartbreaking losses those two years -- any of which might have turned the program's fortunes if reversed.

That multi-overtime loss at A&M was brutal. And if replay had existed back then, we would have won because one of their touchdowns was quite obviously a fumble through the end zone. But we pissed down our leg on like five red zone trips, so it's hard to say we deserved to win.

Guy Morriss couldn't get us over the hump. But he should never be compared to Steele. His teams were infinitely better, tougher and more competitive than Steele's were.

Sad to hear. Prayers for him and his family.

As others have said he really did help our program so much. He repaired connections with HS coaches that had grown sour under the previous 3 coaches. He improved the production on the field (both of the team and individuals), actually coached the players well (getting some drafted) and improved recruiting to where the cupboard was not empty when Briles took over.

Morriss also jump started the marketing of the team which was non existent when he arrived. He has a famous quote about "All you've got is 1 billboard on I-35 north" or something similar.

And don't forget everything Guy did to resurrect the Skunk Creek ShootOut - it's still going strong today thanks to his efforts.

One negative about Morriss, shortly before he was fired he joined Mack Brown in refusing to guarantee Robert Griffin he would play quarterback.

Every coach in America not named Art Briles missed on Robert Griffin. And Morriss had many recruiting misses.

But he did bring in several players who later became stars for Briles' early teams.

No question. Steele's teams were so inept and set us so far back that it took a real effort just to pick ourselves up off the mat to even become competitive again. Guy got Baylor Football headed back in the right direction for the first time in a long, long time.

We took OU to something like a triple or more OT in Norman in 05. We were just shy of a 7 or more win season that year and oddly that season (his best but fell short a really good year) was the season that ended up causing it to fall apart for him--because we were so close in several games but fell short. That we didnt pull off turning the corner in 05 (which to think about just the 3rd season out from Steele would have been a miracle) seemed to hurt morale among fans and alums.

If I remember correctly, he changed the offense after that to be more like Texas Tech's Air Raid. However, we didn't run it very well. (Imitations rarely work). To me that was what eventually led to him being fired. The team was getting so close. Then they changed the offense and started getting blown out.

Accurate. He hired the sniper and Bell got injured. 2006 crapped out. 2007 was a disaster and it was immediately evident at TCU.

We should have beaten OU and Aggy in 2005.

Actually he had Dana Holgerson lined up when he fired Pease but Holgerson then backed out due to family issues or something after the Pease firing was public and official. This screwed Morriss royally. He had no plan B and was suddenly without an OC who had done a decent job for him.

Alzheimers is a disease I wish on no one. Seen it's devastating impact way too close.

But let's not sugarcoat Morris' impact on our program. He was a bad hire.

After the disasterous Kevin Steele tenure, Morriss was a great hire in that (1) coaching candadites weren't exactly clamoring to come and coach here, and (2) he was actually able to get us competitive in the big 12. The state of the program in 2007 was leaps and bounds above where it was when he took it over after the 2002 season. If he had managed to get bowl eligible in the 4 years he was here, he probably would not have been let go at the end of the 2007 season. I liked him personally and I was grateful for his contributions to our school and the football program.
The year Guy was hired, I'd say two things about our program.

1-Few people in our fanbase were aware how bad things were in our program. Player morale. Equipment. Facilities. Support. All of it was below that of a good.....HIGH SCHOOl.

2-The Baylor Board were not willing to admit they didn't have the experience or expertise to lead the program. They'd trot out Tom Stanton and talk about 'building it the right way.' It was a comic level of ineptitude. Save for the few blue hairs, we had no fans that would suggest we were competitive. But yet we spent millions upgrading the luxury suites so that the jumbo shrimpers could watch blowouts in comfort. Spare me the story about money, it was a disaster of leadership. And that fell entirely on the Board.

Guy Morriss took the job for retirement reasons. The program was so bad that when the assistants arrived, many thought about rejecting the offer and going elsewhere. We were missing things like ...a film room, LOL. The blocking sled was broken and out of date. And the weight room? Hilarious.

Mark Nelson, one of his assistants, had gotten his first coaching gig at...my Jr. High. He was an exceptional leader and damned good guy. Wasn't shocked to see him make it all the way to the SEC.

After year 3, Ian told me that if he didn't win, they wouldn't renew his 5 year contract. When he wasn't renewed, it fell back another two years. Which was basically Ian cutting Guy to find someone else. Truth was, Guy was doing Ian's job. He was calling donors and raising money for the program while Ian was on his PC logging into the old site. We have that practice facility because he picked up the phone, not Ian.

That decision cycle was a precursor for the decisions later to come.

Morriss was a straight talker who turned us around.

Guy Morris was a decent guy who did his best but came up short.

Ian brought Briles to Baylor. (AND ALSO THE HEISMAN) That in turn led to The McLane - which you opposed.. All of that that is still paying dividends. Baylor won back to back Championships under Ian. Doesn't sound like a "disaster" to me.

lan is now having success at Liberty.
