It's really a shame he was never honored in person at a game for his service.

RIP GuyMo. Thank you for everything you did here. Gave us the push we needed.

Agree. Hopefully they honor him next week at McLane.

His contribution to getting this thing pointed in the right direction is not forgotten by me.
Highly underrated for his role in bringing Baylor back from the depths. He got the indoor facility started and started turning the momentum of the program.

He was highly underrated at the time because there was a portion of the fan base that hated him. Remember that (2006?) DMN article about the old message board and how the fan base gathered online to criticize him? Those were the early days of dedicated message boards and it was still novel.

I was grateful that he moved the program forward. If he had gotten us to a bowl game he'd have been more appreciated.

Both 05 and 06 were surreal.

2005:

Was our best shot at a win at Kyle Field since at least 1995. There were so many missed individual plays that change that game that we lost in OT. We outplayed them and failed to convert on fourth down twice, including once inside their 10 yard line. I was there and it was a brutally hot game in those awful seats the aggies gave visitors.

We took OU to OT in Norman

We played Tech tough the next week and they got garbage scores to run it up.

Win any of those games and we go bowling.

2006

TCU - I think this was the infamous cramping game where our entire roster seemed to cramp on the field while TCU didn't have that problem. That was a tough loss. If I recall correctly, Jason Smith (future No. 2 overall draft pick) played his first game after converting from TE. I don't remember if it was exclusively him, but we had three false starts deep in TCU territory that absolutely killed momentum on different drives deep in TCU territory.

WSU - I traveled to that game. Refs missed a clear fumble that would have sealed the game for us. One of the papers had a full color picture that showed it was clearly a fumble with the ball about 3 feet in the air and their Running back falling down but the refs missed it. We had so many mistakes in that game. We had a great scatback on that team. We had a perfectly executed trick play and Terrance Parks put WAY too much air on the throw. The ball was up there for an eternity giving the safety time to get back in the play. Our scatback heard the footsteps and the ball fell through his arms even though he was standing still in the end zone and the safety was still five yards away.

TAMU - first time the tarp came off at Floyd Casey and the stadium was rocking that night. Both fan bases were tense that night. Martellus Bennet scored an 70+ yard TD to take the lead with under 7:00 minutes to play but even the TAMU fans believed he dropped the ball short of the goal line. Season fell apart after that game with Bell inured.

There were other similar losses. I think he moved the program way forward and I'm grateful, but so many tough losses that the outcome was fair.

Guy was a great hire at the time.

I can't believe he's only 71. Way too young for this…
I speculate all the hits he took to the head when young as on O lineman played a role.
Sure the hits caused the dementia.

The picture of Mark Stoops and Coach Morriss near the end of the article is truly sad to see.

What a terrible disease that impacts family members and friends, not just the individual with the disease.

It would be cool to plan something to honor Guy's memory and bring Jackie in for that game, if she was interested. She was a big part of the program at that time, too.

We didn't win as much as anyone would have liked during those years, but there were enough highlights to put together a nice video package (Colorado in 2003, A&M in 2004, Iowa State and Oklahoma State in 2005, Colorado and Kansas in 2006).

For a coach who had such modest success in Waco, we had a pretty fair number of dramatic wins and heartbreaking losses. The triple OT win in Boulder and the homecoming comeback against Kansas in '06 were right up there with the A&M win 2004 for me because I was covering the team at the time. Unlike the Steele years, I still have some really good memories of GuyMo's time in Waco.

The most incredible note from that article is that we doubled his salary. Kentucky must have been dirt cheap.

Guy started laying the foundation for the success of Briles era and everything since. He was also like the AD when it came to football. He literally reached out to the BMDs regarding practice facilities in campus and started the ball rolling on the athletic facility complex on campus we have now. I'm glad to see the appreciation for Morriss now. As someone mentioned he was quite wrongfully vilified on BFans his last couple of seasons. The 2007 season he was completely sabatoged and set up to have a terrible season. He was passively aggressively fired after both the 05 and 06 season, which also caused the program to start re collapsing. He couldn't very well resign or he wouldn't be bought out as he would be the one in breach and Baylor apparently wouldnt just be normal and buy him out and be fair to him. Not realizing the strategy of completely handicapping your HC and forcing him to be the HC with his hands tied until the contract expires also sets the program back. It was just more mismanagement in our history.

That practice facility happened because of Guy. He took change on the chin and went head first into the problems of our program.

He was a leader and winner. RIP GuyMo.

Guymo was a class guy and a real player and coach. Given the right support he would have turned us around. He assembled a real coaching staff. Glad he got paid but sorry he was misled. We missed an opportunity with him. God Speed Guy

I can't imagine we would be a Big12 team if we were still practicing at Floyd Casey Stadium.

Baylor Regents Unanimously Approve Proposal For On-Campus Football Practice Facility

Jan. 17, 2007

Quote:

Baylor University President John M. Lilley announced today that in a special meeting held this morning, Baylor's Board of Regents unanimously adopted a proposal to construct an on-campus football training facility. The facility, which is being funded with private resources, is expected to be located on University Parks Drive adjacent to Baylor's other athletics facilities at the Turner Riverfront Complex. A final review of the project plans and specifications has been scheduled for the February 2007 meeting of Baylor's Board of Regents.

"The project affirms Baylor's commitment to the future success of its football program, which is expected to benefit enormously from the new practice facility," President Lilley said. "Construction of this facility has been a high priority in the Victory with Integrity Campaign for our athletics program and accomplishes an important component of Imperative X of Baylor 2012, the university's 10-year vision."

The on-campus practice facility means that for the first time in the modern era Baylor will have its football operations located on its campus. Games will continue to be played at Floyd Casey Stadium.

In comments made after the Regents meeting, Jim L. Turner, Chairman of the Board of Regents, said, "Baylor University is dedicated to pursuing and supporting excellence in every area of its operation. This new football training facility will contribute powerfully to the pursuit of excellence in athletics and in particular in our football program."

"The facility will house football operations and integrate the football program into the campus environment, providing a significant boost to recruiting student-athletes and to our football operations," said Ian McCaw, Athletics Director at Baylor.

The project will be funded at $22 million, and the scope of the project could increase with the addition of other private support.

"I would like to thank Baylor's Board of Regents, President John Lilley and Ian McCaw for making the on-campus football practice facility a reality for Baylor University," Bears' Head Football Coach Guy Morriss said. "This state-of-the-art facility will have a positive impact on the success of Baylor football for years to come."

Construction of the facility will take approximately 18 months.

Further details about the project will be released following the February Board of Regents meeting.

Guy and his team's upset of aggy even brought Baylor and Texas together for a little while.
