Arizona State sucks. They reduced seating at Sun Devil Stadium from 74,865 to 53,599 and still can't fill it. Just another commuter school in an NFL market except there isn't much talent in Arizona to recruit. Might as well add the University of Phoenix.

SDSU would be a much better option. Decent football, very good basketball and tons of SoCal talent for recruiting.

Sounds like a good idea but I don't see the Big 12 elevating another G5 program when there are several P10 schools that might be ripe for the picking in the near future.

I remember a G5 commuter school that elevated itself against a Big 12 team a few years ago in the Fiesta Bowl. Wait, they're now a member of the Big 12.

looking at pre-pandemic numbers, ASU would be #6 in average attendance in the new Big 12 (1. ISU, 2. BYU, 3. WVU, 4. OSU, 5. Tech)

Arizona averaged 40k

both would be solid additions, but it really wouldn't move the needle that much financially. it would also make it more difficult to qualify for the new CFP. it may even hurt the conference's SOS, which could prevent them from getting a second team in.

IMO it only makes sense right now to add UW, Oregon, or Stanford (and those three aren't coming to the Big 12, sorry).
