The problem isn't a lack of students sitting there, it's that they press together towards the middle and that leaves the section with empty ends. There are rules regarding seat size, so it's an unfixable problem. That's why they started allowing others into the empty spots after the Line shows up. They're not checking tickets, just letting them fill in holes left by ticket holders that are crushing the middle of the section.

One reason aggy didn't tear down their student side of the tackle box was to keep student capacity as-is without having them take up more square footage.

Also, if you attended the sellouts at the end of FCS you'll likely remember having to turn somewhat sideways to fit when everyone was standing. That's far from necessary at McLane because the seats are larger.
