The song has a life of its own outside the USA. I've lived in Europe in spurts for about 3 total years, and they all know this one - in English. It was even popular in Eastern/Central Europe. One time I was at a dinner buffet in Hungary in 1997. There was a band playing mostly pop and euro-pop stuff. Then they started with Country Roads. It was awesome at the time, and I sorta thought "Well, the song works anywhere."
The popularity hasn't died down since then. When the song was used in recent years for the Fallout '76 preview, I had a friend tell me he couldn't stop singing it. Then he sends me a link to what he thinks is the original version of the song and it is by a Japanese pop band . . . <scratches head>
This song is now like "No Woman No Cry." Doesn't matter what it means or what the history or the lyrics are, it just makes it into the rotation. At least the fans in Germany recognized it as an American song to sing at an American sporting event.
