From this speech, it seems the character of Kirby Smart is the opposite of Dave Aranda. If this is the kind of attitude and personality that is necessary to win a national championship I want no part of it. I wouled rather our athletes have a better character than what is demonstrated here. I much prefer the kind of person that Damar Hamlin appears to be.

The final was 65-7 because Georgia is that much better than Tcu, who was a pretender all year and basically an 8-4 type team. Georgia would've done that to any pretender they faced last night.

Bull****….you would take Kirby Smart in a New York second, especially if it meant we win a Natty. You are going to base this guy's "character" of one, minute and a half audio clip? I would rather us have a guy that gets our players fired up and ready to play than a guy calmly reading Nietzsche and parables to our guys in the locker room. I like Aranda, but that dude doesn't seem to have much energy and young players feed off energy.

I've heard this speech before. Coach in highschool used the term "machine gun the motherf***ers!" in a similar tone…. needless to say, we did.

It's the ESPN/SEC narrative. Rece Davis was the appointed one last night to push "the dam is about to break" (literal phrase) and all kinds of terms describing Georgia's domination, and the language crescendoed as the game went on. The game called for it, but more restrained language would have probably been displayed by another network. It's just the way things are now in the effort to establish an upper tier (SEC, BIG 10) and tiered level of contracts. I'm not cynical, but I do think that liaison is that cynical.

ESPN now has losing teams using the language of tiered conferences.

We can't really play the "slanted media" card after that one last night. At some point, performance on the field matters ... and that point was hit well before Georgia went to halftime with a 38-point lead.

I am with historian on this. I would be embarrassed if this was something that came out from Aranda. I am no fool and know that this is the typical coach speak to get athletes riled up. I just don't think it is necessary. There are other ways to be impactful with words, see coach Drew and the National Title team. I know football and basketball are different sports, but I doubt that Nick Saban or Dabo Swinney uses the Kirby Smart method for his pre game speeches...but maybe I am wrong.

No. I would not take Kirby Smart & a natty if this is an accurate indication of his character (that's why I used the word "seems"). Some prizes are not worth having & some prices are too high.

The game was essentially over before the second quarter began or at least early in the second. TCU's one TD inspired some hope that it might become "a game" but that was quickly dashed when Georgia scored again. All doubts were gone by halftime after 3 INTs & 3 unanswered TDs in Q2.

Kirby is a hell of a coach and I'd be happy to have him here.

Motivation is important and it's an emotional game...but....I think being loaded with 5*/4* talent took them further yesterday than that fiery speech. I'm willing to bet college teams across the country this year heard a similar type pre-game speech before going out and getting dusted in a game.

That reminded me of Coach Fredenberg only with a little bit more profanity
Coach Teaff used to keep visitors away from the defensive end of the field

The profanity doesn't bother me either way.

Does anyone know if Scott Drew uses profanity when motivating players? That's hard to picture...Mulkey on the other hand....haha

There are, just like there are plenty of examples of all kinds of coaches winning and losing. A loud, spittle in your face coach can have losses just like a quiet coach can have wins, and so on and so on. Some on here just fixate on yelling coaches = wins.

This clip here isn't even from last night. It's from the game against LSU.

Agreed. I'm not saying he is not a good coach, that would be clearly incorrect. I just don't love the approach. I understand the audience Smart is talking to and that resonates to that generation, or some/most of the players. I see language used by teenagers - all the way to people in their 40/50s that I find is disrespectful and offensive…in public places for my young kid to hear. My parents/grandparents taught me to use language in a different way. I'm in my mid-40s and used my share of bad language when I was in high school and at Baylor. I matured to a point where I don't need it to be effective. Do I think his speech could have been just as an effective without telling kids to go "f up the other team", yes I do. Whether it was LsU or TCU matters not. But go ahead and label me as someone that doesn't understand what it takes to be successful, or why Baylor fans don't "get it". I prefer to win/lose with class, that is the legacy that is important to me, but maybe not to others. I'm also not saying that Smart is completely classless, or a bad guy…again I don't like that approach for motivation. The sole measure of success for some on here is the win/loss record and I get that and don't judge for it. Don't judge me for my opinion.

No, there is no "slanted media card" being played just on this occasion. The game was a perfect occasion for an established narrative. You probably know that this strategy and accompanying narratives were well underway even before the launching of the Longhorn Network August 26, 2011 and the ESPN/SEC/LHN convergence.

Natty? Shiiiiiit! I'd take beating TCU like that every year!

I'd never heard a head coach talk like that but assistants? Lots of them.

All of the multi-million $$ P5 HCs out there know what they're doing with things like motivation and motivational speeches using whatever style or technique that suits them. I agree that the ability to stockpile 4 and 5 star recruits like cord wood at virtually every position on the field means a whole lot more when you are talking about seriously competing for and winning Nattys especially in a sport like college football. Since recruiting is a huge part of what differentiates coaches at this level, give Smart all the deserved credit for being able to bring in the level of athletes Georgia is consistently signing. At the same time I'm sure there are several P5 HCs out there that just went 5-7 or 4-8 or even worse that would also be in contention for the Natty if they had anything close to Georgia's talent and athleticism.

Agreed. It's funny that having a potty mouth is crossing the line for some people. I respect how they feel, but having an elite HC with a potty mouth isn't the worst thing that could happen considering the scandal we just went through with a coach who didn't use foul language. They can drop all the F Bombs they want so long as we aren't on the cover of Texas Monthly or Time Magazine for the worst reasons.

Potty mouth coaches aren't rare. Coaches will say some of the filthiest things inside the locker room, kind of unfortunate that the locker room is public now with social media and stuff, but at the same time very entertaining for me.

One of the funniest pre game speeches i ever heard was by Coach Fredenberg;

Hey men playing the #1 team in the country is like getting a date with Ms America. Only we ain't gonna show up in a tux and bring flowers. We come to the door wearing jeans and a nice shirt and a six pack. When she opens the door we're gonna say hey baby I'm ready to ****

He was speaking to his team. He understands what motivates his team/recruits very well. Those kids did not cover their ears and hide in the corner. If they lost you can imagine what he would have said lol. He also hung 50 on LSU. There are no Bubbles on the football field. Only in the grandstand.

Not true. It is possible to win with class. I doubt Dabo Sweeney gave a speech like that when Clemson won their national championships. And they were the first to win it all with a 15-0 record. Those teams were certainly elite. In MBB, Scott Drew is an excellent example of someone who won it all with class.

Besides, as I said before, there are more important things than winning trophies.

You don't know for sure if Dabo has ever used language like that in the locker room? Up until now, Kirby Smart wasn't known for cursing like that. I imagine the reason Cove Dawg said what he did was because for the better part of Baylor's football coaching history the churchy Baylor fans would rather have a preacher than a coach. He said some curse words, not ****ed a coed and crashed a motorcycle.
