Maine transfer defensive lineman Justin Sambu (6-4, 265) has committed to Baylor football coaching staff and will play for the Bears in the 2023 season.
Sambu entered the transfer portal on June 14 and picked up notable P5 offers from Missouri and Mississippi State to go along with G5 offers from Central Michigan, Georgia State, Buffalo, James Madison, and Utah State.
During his time at Maine, Sambu showcased his abilities and made a significant impact on the field. In the 2022 season, he appeared in all 11 games and emerged as a standout performer. Sambu led the team in sacks with 5.5 and hurried the quarterback six additional times. In total, he generated 32 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, and forced a fumble.
Sambu joins TJ Franklin and Gabe Hall as the only senior defensive linemen on Baylor’s roster for the upcoming season and provides immediate depth and experience to the room that has seen heavy turnover the last two seasons.
Sambu is the third non-high school linemen to join Baylor’s roster this offseason. Oregon transfer Treven Ma’ae and Jerrel Boykins of Hutchinson Community College are also expected to make immediate impact in 2023.
He has one year of eligibility remaining.
