30 for 30: #1 Taylor Young — Leadership
LB, Taylor Young (5-9, 225) | DeSoto (TX) High School
— At 265 tackles in his career thus far, Young is an injury-free season from cracking the top 10 in the category for his career. If Young simply continues his average of 88 tackles this fall to take him to 353 career tackles, it would place him at No. 5 on Baylor's career tackle list.
— Along with tackles, Young already sits at No. 9 in school history with 12.5 sacks in his career. Keeping with his average of 4.0 sacks this fall, a total of 16.5 sacks in his career would place him at No. 2 on Baylor's all-time list. Interestingly, Young will battle teammate KJ Smith to claim the top spot.
— With 29 starts in his career, Young is Baylor's most proven returning playmaker on either side of the ball and will be a spark plug and leader for the Bears early in the season. A preseason All-Big 12 for 2017, Young has been named All-Big 12 two times already in his career.
— The statistics are nice, but Young electing to play his senior season under new head coach Matt Rhule was a big recruiting victory. Young, who was rumored to be looking to play his final season elsewhere as a grad transfer, decided to stay in Waco.
— As for all defenders on Baylor's 2017 team, young should excel in a new defensive scheme that is aided by a more conservative approach on offense. The statistics might not improve from where he has been in his first three seasons, but his impact could be even greater as he is fresher later in games.
