Bears Routed by No. 3 Longhorns, 38-6, in Final Matchup as Conference Foes
WACO, Texas – The last matchup between Baylor (1-3, 0-1) and No. 3 Texas (4-0, 1-0) as conference foes ended in a 38-6 routing in favor of the Longhorns Saturday night at McLane Stadium.
The Bears were dominated in every facet of the game. The Longhorns controlled the line of scrimmage and totaled 503 yards of offense while limiting Baylor to 356 total yards and only 60 on the ground.
“Disappointed in the performance and the execution,” head coach Dave Aranda said after the loss. “I thought the line of scrimmage couldn't get anything going from the very beginning. Offensively and skill-wise, there were opportunities for plays, and we didn’t execute.”
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers (So.) sat comfortably in the pocket all evening and finished with 293 yards through the air on 18-of-23 passing. The Longhorns had 11 total possessions and scored on six of them.
“First of all, it’s super disappointing because [we] practice way better than this, and it hasn't been able to translate for whatever reason, I don't know,” safety Devin Lemear (RSo.) said postgame. “We made a big emphasis on energy, and I think we tried to have an emphasis on that [early] and it kind of died out.”
Midway through the first quarter, running back Jonathon Brooks (So.) found the edge and put the Longhorns on the board first with a 40-yard rushing touchdown up the right sideline.
Baylor responded and drove the length of the field after some tough running from quarterback Sawyer Robertson (RSo.), but couldn’t find the endzone, and Isaiah Hankins (RSo.) had to nail a 22-yarder to cut UT’s lead to 7-3.
Following a promising Bears drive that was interrupted by costly penalties, Texas took back control and went up 14-3 after Ewers beat defensive end TJ Franklin (5Sr.) to the edge and cut up the field for a 29-yard rushing touchdown on third and long.
The Longhorns added another score on the following drive, this time on a seven-yard rushing touchdown from running back CJ Baxter (Fr.). Texas entered the red zone on the previous play after wide receiver Xavier Worthy (Jr.) connected with tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders (Jr.) on a trick play for 35 yards.
Texas continued to pour it on, and Brooks found the endzone for his second rushing touchdown of the night to put the Longhorns up 28-3 with 1:49 remaining in the second quarter.
“That’s when the momentum shifted,” Lemear said. “With Texas, when they get momentum, they become a really good team. If you can pressure the quarterback, they are a totally different team.”
The Bears were finally able to score again after Texas muffed a punt deep into its own territory.
Robertson couldn’t find wide receiver Ketron Jackson (Jr.) in the endzone on third and eight and Baylor was forced to settle for another Hankins field goal and trailed 28-6 going into the half.
Just when Baylor’s offense showed some signs of life in the third quarter after wide receiver Monaray Baldwin (Jr.) hauled in a 55-yard reception, Robertson threw an interception on fourth and goal trying to target tight end Drake Dabney (Sr.).
Toward the end of the third quarter, the Bears recovered another muffed punt inside the red zone but were unable to score any points. Robertson was taken down on fourth and goal and was sacked five total times in the contest. Baylor was also 1-for-5 on fourth-down conversions Saturday.
Baylor will travel to Orlando for a matchup against the UCF Knights next Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
