Ten Things At Cincinnati

October 21, 2023

Baylor travels to Cincinnati to meet the Bearkats for the first time in program history. Here are at least ten things from the game:

  1. Huge stop on the 4th and 1 inside Baylor territory
  2. The willingness to block for your teammates from the wide receiver and tight end group on screens continues to be a failure. Game after game defenders run free to make a tackle for loss without anyone laying a hand on them.
  3. If you can’t trust Hankins, who can you trust? Credit Josh Cameron‍ for the great punt return
  4. All season long the opposition shows if you stretch the defense to the edges the linebackers cannot get there to make the play and it continues today from false steps, lack of speed, lack of reading the play, coaching, you can name it, but they’re just not playing well
  5. Ketron Jackson‍ just did what we expected him to do: win those balls
  6. Great blocking on the drive to retake the lead early in the second quarter. Coleton Price‍ at center is getting to the secondary level despite playing against a preseason All-American and Barrington appears more comfortable at guard.
  7. Everything is going Baylor’s way early as Byron Vaughns‍ scoops and scores on a fumble on a kickoff return. Vaughns punches the ball loose on the next series as well.
  8. It wouldn’t be a Baylor game if a play wasn’t completely blown by the defense missing at least three tackles
  9. Richard Reese‍ has the first RB carry with 5:16 left in the 2nd quarter
  10. Just a head-scratching two play calls to almost get the QB killed and can’t get a yard in two plays to give the Bearkats momentum
  11. Great to see Tre Emory‍ get on the field and his first sack of his young Baylor career
  12. The offense has lost the Reliable and Violent identity, and it shows again and again
  13. There is the blocking on throws to the flat by Kelsey Johnson‍ and Cameron and Jake Roberts‍ scores his first Baylor touchdown
  14. Great stop by the defense to maintain the 12-point lead
  15. Hankins for MVP!!!!
  16. Defense gave up 6+ yards a carry with 14:20 to go in the game, but still leads due to turnover margins and converting FGs
  17. The offense is starting to show the identity we want to see, but how much is the Bearcat defense?
  18. Then the offense quits running the ball and thankfully, Hankins is the GOAT today for another long field goal to put the Bears up 11
  19. Just flat-footed defenders all year long on the edge. If you don’t attack, then you don’t make plays. Outcoached on defense all year as technique isn’t being corrected.
  20. Corey Gordon‍ with the game-winning pass breakup!

Rewatched the game.
1. Shapen missed some easy throws (need to work on the read option more).
2. WRs dropped a few passes.
3. We did everything we could not to run the ball
4. Freshman Punter and Kickers look good
5. Have to admit the team did look better than previous weeks (although it's hard not to improve on the **** show that was Texas Tech)

Yeah, they won; but it was nothing to write home about.

Number 9 is shocking to me. Strategy?

Can somebody explain to a novice why Shapen throws so many side arm passes even when no defensive player is in front of him? He seems really inaccurate doing it and most of his bad throws come sidearmed.

Number 7 was huge. We needed those points.

Well, this is a very unpopular observation around here so feel free to skip it. But the answer to your question is he's not a very good quarterback and he's always struggled to read defenses. Now that the 2021 O line is gone it's just more noticeable. But it's always been that way.

His QB coach is Shawn Bell.

So what? At least we aren't the worst B12 team, which is a miracle based on where we started.

I will say the offense got creative and somewhat productive abandoning the run. For all the changes, I think they did decent and there weren't a lot of penalties.

Special teams were very good.

Defense takes bad angles on the runner sometimes which leads to big ground gains. The secondary was aggressive but pass interference wasn't being called so they adjusted well.

In the end it was a good road win.

I think it has more to do with Grimes and everybody likes to blame Bell. Grimes former protege Zack Wilson throws a lot of sidearm passes and when he got to the NFL the talking heads talked about how he would have to be retrained.

Why would an OC with an OL background have any influence on the throwing mechanics of a QB?

It's the QB coach's fault.

Blake Shapen has been great this year. If anything, his play/improvement should put to rest the constant whining about Shawn Bell's coaching ability.

This offense has a huge problem up front. But Blake has consistently made plays and competed despite that. Anyone complaining about him this season doesn't know ball.

…. especially when considering how the OL has not protected him well.
