Good to hear! There is still a definite demand for unapologetic Christian values based higher education. And while there are signs BU has been influenced to some degree by the woke mobs of academia (what happened with the former Burleson Quadrangle says hello) it's also clear that the university still hasn't entirely surrendered to that insanity as have most colleges and universities - which is appealing to a significant number of people.

meh. "Unapologetically Christian" is not exactly the way that I'd describe Baylor (unfortunately).

In reality most people dont give a **** about Burleson Quadrangle or whatever else former slave owner statue you want to remove. It really does nothing for people of color other than provide some fake comfort. What I find bewildering is how some of you are so attached to some statute/building that you never even noticed until someone said something about removing it. Now all of sudden you are all woke for preservation of white history

Baylor is as close to "unapologetically Christian" as you're going to get if you want to be taken seriously by other academic institutions and attract top tier talent (faculty, students, etc.).

I applaud the school for working towards the likes of Notre Dame without abandoning their values a la TCU or falling and becoming a Bob Jones/Liberty.

Why can't we preserve White history? It's funny to me that people who likely never originated from actual slaves complain the most about removing any reference to former slave owners....you do realize that Blacks bought and sold Blacks, transported them over from the West Indies. (Not Africa as many would believe) to America and sold them into slavery and they were ultimately released by Lincoln.....By your "woke" narrative, then where is the outrage about Yale University, The Roman Colosseum where slaves of ALL colors were bought, sold and left to die at the hands of Gladiators or Wild Animals.

Let's stop with the color nonsense. You want to be seen as equal - then pull up your pants, stop accounting for an overwhelming % of crime in this country (which by the way is Black on Black), lose the "disrespect" narrative, stop having babies with 3-4 different women, stop with the special month of the year....the rant could go on and on and on.....

Yes, there are still going to be people who treat blacks differently and that's on them.....so just ignore them. Stop trying to be the "thought" police.

Not sure how one would make it more Christian without turning it into Bob Jones like someone said above. Baylor posts bible verses, mandates chapel and a couple theology classes, hosts Christian music concerts, has professors who pray before class, etc. One of my favorite professors was Jewish and I was glad he was able to teach at Baylor. One my best friends in undergrad was not religious. He offered thought provoking legitimate critiques on the church. Closing off to the outside world can make a place of faith become a place of blind fanaticism.

Why can't we just preserve, respect, and learn from ALL history while accepting and understanding that all human beings (with one important exception) are and were flawed people that sinned during their life? It's wrong to discredit and to attempt to erase historical figures that had a notable positive impact simply because of their worst human failings. Just like MLK's historical significance and positive impact shouldn't be discredited and erased because he was a serial adulterer, similarly a key figure in BU's history like Rufus Burleson shouldn't be discredited and diminished (even symbolically) because of his worst sin.

I realize there are people who couldn't care less about history - and I respect that - but how about at least having a modicum of respect for those of us that do. And for ImwithBU's benefit I was very aware of Burleson's statue and the historical significance of Burleson Quadrangle going back to my time as a BU student in the 1970's.

Well it was certainly not Bob Jones in 2001

Most people just rightly point out that we have in fact moved further to the cultural Left over the past 20 years....baby steps I will admit...but still a noticeable move toward a more liberal stance on issues.

Gay clubs, statues taken down, etc. you get the drift.

And when it comes to hiring faculty members Baylor has all but thrown up its hands and given in and now hires like 90% progressives & Liberals. (Maybe that's all who is out there applying?)

Its a great university but we were never Bob Jones and are certainly not in danger of that now.....we are more in danger of becoming another TCU...a good private school that is more secular and post-religious with a rich kid student body.

I guess time will tell

I am actually distantly related to Burleson so I can assure you I knew who he was when I got to campus.

I used to love walking past his statue on the way to class....I have pic in my house right now of my entire family around his statue at my graduation (including with my grandmother who is now gone)

And the whole "who cares about a Statue" argument is more of a reason to ask why the Liberal faction at Baylor wanted it torn down. They did not know anything about the man or care until it was made an issue by activists...and even then they never determined with 100% accuracy if Burleson even owned a slave....they said it was "likely" that he owned a slave. We torn his statue down on a possibility.

(ps anyone know where that statue is right now? )

If you want R1 status you have to do a little give and take. Professors have always been more of the left. Even the majority of professors getting axed/suspended for pushing back on the thought police who go write an op-ed for Fox News identify as liberal.

I did have conservative professors at Baylor or at least ones I'd definitely assume were who had no problem speaking their mind. Very different than friends of mine who went elsewhere. I also had liberal professors but I never had a woke hive mind professor. Undergrad and graduate school.

I realize that Baylor is not unique in the tuition hikes and the problem is countrywide. It saddens me the same.

I agree to an extent.

To this point in my life my Baylor degree has not gotten me a job just because of the school, or even a higher paying job than what someone could get with a degree from any state school.

And while any degree from an accredited university will help a person with a higher lifetime earning (for the most part granted they don't graduate with a social work or made up degree and earn $20,000 a year)

When a person could potentially graduate with $280,000 in debt that will take a long time to pay off given that in many jobs it takes a while to start earning at the higher end.

For me, the difference was the Mentor program that Baylor had.

The benefit of the private University is if you are the type of person that gets distracted by campus life at A&M or UT. For me, I would never have done as well at a big State school.

280$? That seems steep, but I don't know. I know my son got through A&M-Galveston for about 58k total.

Additionally, the things that make BU different and the other life lessons that can be and are learned there in addition to the academics are worth some additional cost IMO. Granted, it can be argued that it still isn't worth that kind of difference as compared to a state school, but that's a function of preference and opinion in addition to the financial consideration. I'm glad a school like BU is still an option - even at the current ever increasing costs - and I'm glad there is still obviously an ample supply of students willing to pay the price of a BU education.

There is another thread on this as well that shows the cost, from the Baylor site, that shows the current cost of BU to be $70,000 per year. So times 4 and it is 280.

Granted that is with no scholarships, no grants, and only straight cost or straight loans.

You just ranted just to rant and just pulled a bunch of bull**** out of your ass. First of all, everyone is aware of Blacks selling slaves and that doesnt make what happened over here any less egregioius. One wrong doesnt excuse another wrong.

"Black on Black crime" is pretty much media driven. Newsflash all races lead the crime rates against their own race. Its simply a proximity rule. Did you 85% of white people are killed by white people? Now how do you think that works for the other violent crimes among white people. No its not the big black man walking down the street that going to kill you. Its the relative, friend, co-worker or neighbor. Despite these facts (look it up on FBI website if you must) we never hear "White on White crime."

Again the statues are bull***** The special month, caucasians created. I walked on Baylor's campus for 4 years and regularly attend events there to this day. Saw no more racist stuff on that campus than I saw in the general world. Never paid attention to Quadrangle/Burleson and dont give a **** about the buildings now.

Black men fathering multiple babies is a mytth that has been disproven but still stands strongs in people's mind since it was introduced in the 50s. Yes some black men have babies by multiple women (32%) which means 68% dont have babies by more than 1 women. For some reason we got fixated on the minority group in those stats. 29% of black men are single fathers but we dont highlight that do we so why fixate on the minority other than it fits the narrative we want to paint. What you need to learn is stop treating blacks as a monolithic group. I fall in the 68%, married for 15 years and father of 2. I grew up in a "fatherless home," and my dad fit the 32% of men having women by more than 1 women. The catch to that is my mom was his first wife, divorced when I was 7 and remarried when I was 14. My younger sister is by his 2nd wife who is he is still married to this day. Although not physically in my house daily and he was always in my life. Nevertheless he fits the "stop having babies by different women category"

Again racism is a part of life. It doesnt make or break my day. Ignorant people of all races walk this planet and this country. I dont feel the need to spend my day bashing this country or drumming up woe its me. I grew up in a "fatherless home." Attend a top 100 university in the country. Met my wife on that campus. We both went on to get terminal degrees and make a pretty good living.

Again the black Americans are not a monolith, just like white Americans are not a monolith. I refuse to carry the baggage of "black on black crime," "dead beat dads" or whatever else stereotype is out there.

TLDR: Popular media, let alone other avenues, in the US has historically (and even now pushes) negative stereotypes about African Americans. It's absolutely nothing new and it will continue to exist despite some efforts to combat it.
