This is what the blue bloods want. They want to go back to most of the teams being D1AA (FCS) and just the big boys being at top.

Since around 70% of P5 teams will never really be in a legitimate hunt for the coveted 11 spots any given year in the supposed new "expanded" playoff what else do you do with the remaining 25 P5 teams that are still in the top half with an 8-4 record with at least a winning conference record? Make it a 24 team consolation playoff and all P5 teams with 8 or more wins gets in with a winning conference record.

G5 conference winners and runner ups get in the bracket that don't make the main CFP and any G5s with 9 wins. Get rid of all of the bowl games not tied to a backet and with 36 teams playing the post season you still have 40-50 less teams playing December and January football than you would have had with low and mid tier bowls. Nobody can complain that 36 teams having something to play for is too many teams when over 80 teams played last season.

Somebody needs to pull an AFL / USFL kind of move. The money is there.

Except the teams want to play in bowl games and a lot of fans want to watch them.

It makes no sense to do something outside the 12 team playoff for G5 only. With 18-24 team mega conferences these days there's going to be just as many decent P5 teams as quality G5 teams on the outside looking in…
