Wow! Good luck to both of them on this. I was kind of hoping Bell might be given an OC shot at Tech. But his upbringing is probably too conservative offense based.

I'm gonna disagree with that. His dad let them sling it around a little bit

Well I meant under Brent Pease as a player, then Nixon and Grimes as a college coach until this season.

Longo was on our radar for OC...runs the Air raid.

Samples from Dallas.. current running back coach at Oregon..he's very young like 29..was associate head coach at SMU under Dykes.

Bell might have the inside track with his brother Brian playing for national championships at Sam. I would imagine he would have his brother on the staff too.

I would cry if those were the two choices. I'm sorry, I'm sure they are nice guys. I will at least say that Powledge is a pretty good special teams coach from what I hear and have seen

Might be a great spot for Bell. I'd love to see him get the opportunity.

I'm guessing this is a sign someone is about to be announced as the new HC. There could be other announcements like this today perhaps. If my first sentence is correct.

This is interesting because Samples was believed to be the favorite by many.

Probably doesn't want to leave a potential NCAA Championship team just yet. They might be willing to wait, but still, that's a big drop in programs you're working for. He can probably be somewhat picky.

I don't see why an AHC of a P2 team--one favored to win the CFP this year--would go to SHSU as a starting point. I would think there could be better potential openings

I think AhC is a title usually given to a position coach to do a few extra things for the HC that are a bit more administrative in nature. I think coordinators are actually assistant HCs in fact as they are each in charge of half the team and game strategy for their half the team.

Right. But, assistant to the regional manager aside, Sam Houston is barely FBS. You would think someone with his connections could do better

He's only 29 or 30..so SHSU may not be that bad of a starting place.

His dad is 69 and is head coach of Duncanville High.

You can't recruit to that offense.

Howdy to the Bears. Just checking to see what you all think about Shawn and Matt switching from Bears to Bearkat. I got to see Matt play at Sam after I graduated and Brain Bell brought life to our stadium when he played here. I don't know much about Shawn Bell but if he is like Brain Lord help us I don't know if my old age can handle it. But I will sure try. I had the pleasure of seeing y'all stadium several years ago when Sam played Richmond spider there. One of y'all alumni gave us a grand tour of it along with a great prime rib. Wife couldn't make it but my three daughters really enjoyed themselves.

Shawn is a good recruiter and is well-connected in TX highschool football, but I felt that his ability to develop players left a lot to be desired. My understanding is that Shawn had a lot of people in his corner here as evidenced by him retaining his job after Rhule left; I think he's a nice guy, and the quarterbacks seemed to really like him. My perception of him is that he's more of a mild mannered coach rather than a rah rah charismatic cheerleader type or screaming type like Gary Patterson

Now, would I want to hire him as head coach here at Baylor? Nope. My druthers would be to hire a head coach with more coordinator experience in the college ranks, but it's certainly not a necessity (see: Joey McGuire).

I'm a Shawn Bell fan. He's was a contemporary of mine at Baylor, and the dude is sharp as a tack. He has his detractors here because our OC at the time picked the wrong QB after our conference championship in 2021, but he's worked for some really good head coaches and is highly thought of by some of the best in the business.

I think he'd be a good hire for Sam with some really good mentors he could lean on as a sounding board.

So it's the offensive coordinator's job to make the decision about who's going to be the starting quarterback…..Interesting

It is when the rookie head coach delegates that duty to him.

Btw, I'd like to add that I am not one of Bell's former teammates or buddies; He seems like a nice guy, but objectively speaking, he does not have a lot of skins on the wall, and I can't really point to much that he did at Baylor that would make me think he needs to be a head coach. But obviously, the guy has great connections in the industry. I can't look at the UH quarterback situation this year and say that Bell did a great job there, either

Like I said, I don't hate the guy. Just my .02.

We've already had this discussion on Jeff Traylor and Joey McGuire -- and Art Briles before that -- but Shawn Bell had eight years as a head coach before he ever coached a single practice at Baylor.

Most Bearkat like Shawn better than Phil Longo.. His air raid offense is to fast and it leaves your defense gassed by the forth quarter. Then there's a few that like Matt. As for myself I am willing to give Shawn a chance and see what kinda staff he puts together and hopefully he will develop into a head coach.. I just hope he is open minded to listen to them. A head coach will go far if they listen and learn and the same for the staff. We had the youngest defense coordination in the league at 27 and he was really great.. He held teams to 10 points in most games. But he left to North Texas and took his staff with him. I did hear him and his staff are coming back to coach our bowl game Saturday. I was really surprised how developed this young man is in reading offenses. He will be a hot commodity real fast for big 12 or SEC.

The typical HS-to-D1 coaching jump tends to be guys who've wrecked shop at the HS level, like Joey and Traylor. Shawn was an above average HS coach who absolutely torched his bridge in Clifton, never won more than 9 games at Magnolia West, and inherited a stacked team in his one season at Cedar Ridge and only won one playoff game with them - and the next guy up took that same roster to the state semis a year later. My kids are in the Cedar Ridge pipeline and I'll say that his rep around here is not great.

I have nothing against Shawn, but the previous poster is right that he has very few skins on the wall to call his own and running a D1 program at this point is an enormous leap based purely on his resume.
