Could someone please explain how SMU got into the playoffs?
I tried to watch it, but just too painful for the Bear Backer.

I do think some of what we saw today was just game flow. You throw two pick-sixes and things get out of hand and snowball against you. They definitely had good chances to score several times in the first half. I'm not saying they would've won, but they were not as bad as that score showed.

You know how they got in the playoffs. Blowouts happened in the 4 teams CFP, and they will continue to happen in the 12 team CFP.

There were a lot of people who thought that they didn't deserve to be in the playoffs, and unfortunately this game confirms that idea. Same thing with TCU when they got embarrassed by Georgia.

Snakebit with turnovers. Games can get ugly fast.

Hell they were on the verge of scoring a TD in the first drive. The QB made mistake of not settling for the first down on like 4th and one or so at about the PSU 20z He easily had it at and instead of just crossing the first down line he threw for a TD that was incomplete.

Well, they got in because people were throwing a fit about the possibility of them being left out for 3-loss Bama (SMU was 11-1 entering the ACC Title Game).

However, unlike Indiana's weak-sauce schedule, which was highlighted by their 5-point win over Michigan (7-5), SMU's resume was much stronger.

The Mustangs had wins against the following teams:

Duke (9-3)
Louisville (8-4)
TCU (8-4)
Pitt (7-5)
BC (7-5)

And their two losses were both by three points against the following:

BYU (10-2)
Clemson (10-3 after that ACC Title Game)

So I have no problem with SMU getting in as the ACC runner-up due to having a respectable body of work.

But they didn't do themselves (or those who screamed for their inclusion) any favors with today's performance.

You know how you keep TCU out of the championship game... Dont lose to them. Blowouts happen every year and it has nothing to due with the school name. TCU blew out Ole Miss the year we loss to Mich State. Oklahoma got blown out by Florida in a championship game. Oklahoma blew out Alabama in a BCS championship game. Blow outs happen every year in the "biggest games". Its simply part of the game and guess what there will be a blow out next week as well

The ACC is clearly the distant 4th power conference. Both Clemson and SMU look outclassed. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be in the playoffs...just that the ACC is an extremely weak conference.

I'll keep it simple. They won almost all their games. Barely lost to Clemson. QB was horrible today against a good PSU team.

do you think the big 12 is an incredibly strong conference?

So when TCU got blown out by Georgia, what should have been done? Should Michigan have been put into the championship even though they lost to TCU?

It's hard to say much about the ACC right now - They got two teams in with another team 2 teams out from making it, and ASU hasn't even played (likely Texas) yet.

i agree. Just believe most would also agree that it is the sec and big 10 conferences and then a huge step down would be the big 12. Then another smaller step down is the ACC.

Literally every other major ncaa playoff has ample representation across conferences. Blow outs are bound to happen. Alabama could have just as easily been blown out by Penn State. I think we're also seeing how huge having the home field advantage is.

It seems like all the complainers on X though are just wanting to see just Big 10 and SEC teams in the playoff. If that's the case, then please have those two conferences form their NFL G League already.

or even better, have those 2 conferences play more conference games instead of playing non conference games against Southwest Idaho State Community College.

TCU got embarrassed by Georgia in the national championship game. Do you speak English?

In other news, there sure are a lot of SMU fanboys on this board. I dont get that

So is this what we're gonna do now? The narrative around the first round games is that the teams who lose didn't deserve the invite in the first place?
LTBear19

Nope. Kansas State should have gone in their place, as the Big XII Champion.

They won the game that mattered, and just like Clemson this year, should have been in the CFP that year - despite their record.

How did they not deserve to be in the national championship game when they WON THE SEMIFINAL GAME???

And what is your racist diatribe against Asians? I'm not Asian, you ****ing idiot.

Big 10 plays 9 conference games. It's the SEC who are cowards.

In the Big 10's defense, they do play 9 conference games - same as the Big XII.

The ACC and SEC are the 2 conferences gaming the system (only playing 8 games each).

Yet to be determined. However, I feel like the Big XII is significantly better than the ACC and on par with the Big 10.

It's not about being an SMU fan boy. It's about the smaller school getting their chance. We would have loved for there to have been a playoff during the Briles era. SMU earned the right on the field to be on the playoff. Real fans are tired of people moving the goal post to get an SEC Big 10 matchup all the time. As I said blowouts are going to happen. Clemson blown out
Tenn looks like they will be next

Looks like the CFP stage was too big for Tennessee, Clemson, Indiana, etc as well. Or maybe home field and the other teams were just really good.

Clemson looked fine. They were fairly composed and unlike the rest of the losing teams an actually had a chance with slightly better red zone execution.

Their talent just isn't nearly as good as it was, especially in the trenches. The other teams were rattled. Home field is a major advantage.

I think I would be good with an 8 team playoff system - just skip this first round home game bs. There is always going to be someone left out who thinks they are deserving - no matter where the cutoff is - that whole round 1 was so boring - and the home field advantage is huge - just skip it and let the FCS boys have this weekend all to themselves - now those were some great games!
PartyBear

I enjoyed the games yesterday. Some want to scrap a 12 team play off because of 4 games? Seriously if anything it should go to 16. Teams in the play off are going to lose. Not sure why the sudden shock this would happen in the first round. That is kind of the idea. Narrowing it down to one winner.
WA Jim
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yea - I would be good with that - 16 team playoff system or even more - where you use the bowl games as the venues for the early round games - just get rid of the home field thing- I think using the bowls (maybe starting one week earlier than this time around) is the way to go.
