I saw where Rhule said a few weeks ago he was worried about holding the Spring game was like free advertising for other schools to scout players they would want to try and pick up in the spring portal window.

The spring game never was anything besides a wasted practice to throw a spring time bone to football junkies before sending the kids home for the summer.
Kids haven't gone home for the summer in like over a decade. Fall games give way to winter conditioning which begets spring practice, then into summer conditioning, fall camp, and the new season.

The spring game features a one page playbook that does nothing more than sort out where the coaching staff thinks the 1's and 2's are on the roster. Nowadays, this just lets some other team's agents call up and say, "We can offer you a starting role in the fall". You know you have to constantly re-recruit your entire roster before every transfer window. Why make it even harder?

Just speculating, but a spring game has probably always been a slight loss leader for most. Even with some getting TV revenue, probably not that much of a payday, but good for exposure. Today in a 365 football media world the big programs get plenty of exposure, and spring games likely don't move the needle in any way.

They would be better off televising the Transfer Portal draft, and make that a new ludicous sports event, and big reveal TV spring power rankings.

But not really that slow. It has been accelerating.

Ohio State isn't canceling their spring game. Champions stay ready.

The benefit is freshmen have a chance to play in a lit home stadium with fans and PA and that can ease the mistakes opening games.
