I met him at an Easter sunrise service on Galveston Bay that his brother pastored in approx 2005. We had a nice talk . His brother pastored the church across the street from our house at the time.

Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Baylor legend J.J. Joe. His remarkable talent and leadership on the field were matched only by his commitment to excellence off the field. J.J.'s legacy will forever be etched in Baylor history and in the hearts of all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

Shockingly terrible news, one of the all-time best 'Baylor Bears'

Horrible news. Great guy, great Baylor qb, one of my favorite players of all time. Really enjoyed his work on the broadcasts. Just shocking news, hard to even imagine he is gone way too soon.

I was really hoping you were trolling, or that this would end in some joke. This is just horrible news. I know he's home with our Heavenly Father now, which is joyful, but it is so sad for those of us left behind to miss him until we see him again.

Sic Em Forever, JJ.

I hate to hear this. Such a great guy. He was QB when I was attending.

Am still not convinced JJ is gone. If I look at the source of this news, then in may very well be just another hoax.

Little or no credibility with the original poster.

So damn sad - awesome family man, brother in Christ, football announcer, easily our most well-known quarterback. Please tell me this is not true.

Horrible horrible news. Scary similar to Tom Muecke dying in 2016 from a heart attack at age 52

I am so sad and distraught right now. I have nothing to say, but enjoy Heaven, J..J., You have earned it.

He was a childhood hero of mine. I have his autograph on a f ew items.

I get it, though. I have a family history of heart attack and stroke, and as I get closer to 50, I have actually outlived other men in my family .

Great QB. Great commentator. Great man.

Go enjoy Heaven, J.J.

He was our QB while I was still in undergrad. '87-'91. Surreal.

A Baylor legend and probably the best option QB under Grant Teaff. Modest, humble, hard working guy who made John Morris better as well most everyone else he was around, including his teammates. He will be missed and we were fortunate to have him around Baylor all these years.

JJ Joe is a Baylor Legend - - everything he did on and off the field. Really sad to learn this news...

I survived the "widow maker" last month. I would encourage everyone to get a Calcium Marker test - my cardiologist from Houston Methodist says it's the only true test to identify blockage, etc. as my initial blood work was clear and I was showing no prior symptoms..

I never did see JJ Joe play QB but I loved him on the radio with JMo. That call of the Big 12 championship goal line stand might be my personal favorite radio call in any sport… ever. It is an all-timer. Rest in peace JJ.

Not a whole lot on YouTube from way back then, but here is a typical JJJoe play we ran numerous times:

The games that are out there are mostly our stinkers from that era (1991 Rice, 1991 & 1992 Aggy, 1992 LaTech, 1992 Colorado), but here are a couple of better ones.

1991 TCU:

And the 1992 John Hancock Bowl over Arizona:

His ability to nonchalantly hide the ball on his back hip while waiting for Melvin Bonner to run free over the middle wasn't seen again around here until RGIII. Unfortunately no apparent YouTube highlights of that on display from 1991 Mizzou and SMU, or the famous "Alumni Special" vs Georgia Tech in 1992.

This is surreal. I just received my own calcium marker results yesterday. Incidentally those of you in Waco. You can get this done at Providence. No doctor referral just set an appointment. They send the results to you and your doctor. Cost is $150 but during the month of Feb they run a special and charge just $40.

He also had an opposite play in which he would fake a long pass stand there like he didn't have the ball anymore with the ball behind his hip and casually flip it to a guy running across behind him for usually a decent run. The best performance of this was against UH in 91 or 92 perhaps at home that went for a TD. There may be video of that posted. However I cannot access those for some reason.

JJ was my BU QB for most of my undergrad years at BU. The veer option plays and deep passes to Bonner were fun to watch. A guy on our Penland hall even made "Joe Knows Football" t-shirts as a play off the Bo Jackson slogan.

I looked for one of those, but couldn't find one other than the video at Tech posted above. I seem to recall that after we ran that play so successfully to Lee Miles vs. Houston, defenses started to "stay home" and not follow the fake sweep to the other side. So we ran the play, swept everyone to the right, faked the reverse pitch left to Miles, and JJ kept it for a TD around the right side.

The man was an artist with the play-action fake, in all its forms.

This is a gut punch, almost unbelievable. He will be greatly missed by Baylor fans. My late dad always talked about him playing, especially when RG3 was getting huge. And of course, JJ was great in the booth. RIP....Praying for his family and friends.
