Because he claimed people confused Baylor with Boston University?

Apparently now we are having to sue Boston U for their trademark infringement of…..the interlocking BU.

Baylor is and has always been pretty bad at branding.

I would be surprised if Boston wins this one. The fact that we've been using the interlocking BU longer and openly discussed branding issues with Boston over the decades should put it in our favor.

Having said that, Boston is much more "BU" outside of Texas than we are. Just the interlocking logo is the sticking point, which we've had for some time

IIRC, Boston U primarily used a side-by-side BU as opposed to the interlocking one. And their BU is identical to the one Baylor used for 30+ years before adding the notch in the U in 2019, except for the color.

It's no different than if South Carolina started using an interlocking SC:

On the other hand, if you asked any average person outside of New England about Boston U, their first response would probably be "Is that where Doug Fluite played football?"

The interlocking BU logo dates all the way back to Bill Beall's first season as our HC in 1969 when it first appeared on football helmets (we infamously went winless that year). It was the one and only long lasting positive thing from his disastrous three seasons at the helm.

Yes but our 2019 version has always been our traditional and historic interlocking BU just ignore your own personal knowledge and memories of what you have been an eye witness to for decades..

He did manage to ultimately get the awful Packers colors even if he lost badly on the arched Baylor word mark.

Not so fast--we may be seeing more of the sissified cursive "Baylor" helmets worn at the Texas Bowl.

Unlikely. Full name using a probably easily-accessible font is not a trademark.

The issue isn't that we share the letters "BU" with Boston University. It's that the style of interlocking is identical/near-identical with just a color change.

Yes I know. Maybe I should have marked the cursive helmet as sarcasm?

I wear an interlocking BU hat frequently. Only once, in Wisconsin of all places, has a person asked me if I went to Boston University. I was quite surprised by their mistake. I think the mole hill and the mountain may be colliding.

School started by and named after a slave owner suing the alma mater of Martin Luther King, Jr. Nice look.

BTW, Bob Jones Universeity almost sued Baylor in 2014 when the football scanal hit, since essentially Baylor had become BJU.

I remember when Mary Hardin Baylor College became Mary Hardin Baylor University. We sued and they became the awkward sounding University of Mary Hardin Baylor.

Before that it was either a numeral or nothing on the sides of the helmet.

It's been 160 years since slavery was abolished in this country, over 60 years since the Civil Rights Act was passed, and this is a simple (likely open and shut) lawsuit regarding trademark infringement.

You're an idiot.

no- there has been an interlocking BU since the 1890's at least. ive looked at the old yearbooks before and its definitely present. The style was a bit different (where the interconnection happens on the "top" loop in the B rather than the 2nd), with old english font- it was kind of neat looking in my opinion

The more modern Baylor BU has that little notch in it. Other than that, the other guys literally copied and pasted the original BU and changed the color.

Maybe there was use of the initials "BU" in some configuration on jerseys back in that time period, but it wasn't the same as our now traditional interlocking "BU" logo that originated in 1969.
