Baylor Football Revamps 'Gold-Chrome' Helmets; Plans to Debut against Auburn in Opener

Baylor football is bringing back one of its most iconic looks with plans to wear gold-chrome helmets in the season opener against Auburn at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, at McLane Stadium.

Baylor football is bringing back one of its most iconic looks with plans to wear a revamped gold-chrome helmet in the season opener against Auburn, as announced by Baylor Athletics on social media.

The primetime non-conference showdown versus Auburn at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, at McLane Stadium is being marketed as “Blackout on the Brazos.” The Bears will match the gold-chrome helmets with the anthracite uniforms that were touched up and reintroduced after a five-year hiatus last season in Baylor’s 31-3 victory over Air Force on Sept. 14, 2024.

The return of the gold-chrome helmets is an homage to one of the most successful stretches in program history, where the Bears reached double-digit wins in three straight seasons from 2013 through 2015. At one point, the gold-chrome helmets were believed to be the best helmets in college football.

Although Baylor still wore the gold-chrome lids on occasion up until 2017, arguably the most memorable moment came in 2014, when the Bears walked off TCU with a last-second field goal in a thrilling 61-58 win.

Had him sign a bu hat after the ISU game in Ames. The hat still sits in a memorabilia case in my dad's office a decade later.

I hope we get some great hype vids this year. We had them almost every week from 2013 to 2015 but few since, except 2019 & 2021.

Underlying the return to chrome is a significant attitude.

I do not believe Baylor would be doing this except for their belief that this year's team is capable of delivering the results that must go with the swagger.

In the end there are dynasty programs that step onto the field year after year with their unchanging uniforms serving as a testament to their legacy of excellence...and there are wannabees that change their garb like furniture stores run sales to attract customers.

Really only Bama, Penn St and Texas are the only 3 I can think of who have not thrown in new wrinkles in the past 3 or so decades or in Bama's or PSU's case longer. Ohio State, OU, Michigan, ND all have different alt unis worn 3 or so games a season.

In our case this is actually returning to having something that is very similar to our traditional helmet.
