Dave will not call plays next year

He just said in his press conference.

someone on this board suggested that he could be retained but hire a new D-coordinator. I said if the defense doesn't improve there's no way he is retained. It turns out I was dead wrong. The defense got worse, Dave is firing himself, and we will get a new defensive play caller.

Dave appears to be the most unhappy coach in America and is in an increasingly impossible situation. Someone have mercy on the man and let him take a vacation from this torture spiral we have him in. Good grief. He needs to take a year off, reconnect with his family, and then take a defensive analyst position in Hawaii and learn to love life again. No organization can function well when the leader is absolutely miserable. If he turns this around at this point it will be an absolute miracle.

In the 1% chance he does turn it around, it will be rebuilding "from the inside out" as he said, but not in the way he meant it.

Is it Savior Syndrome or White Knight Syndrome? Maybe both! He has it. Somehow he thinks he has to prove to himself that he can make this right and turn it around. Unfortunately, he is wrong.

He will call plays next year…as the defensive coordinator at San Diego State U after he's fired in October.

I know this runs against conventional wisdom, but there are people whose personality and nature simply fit them to be head coaches, and others to be in a subordinate position. CDA is in the second group, which doesn't make him less of a person. When he leaves BU I fully expect him to return to a coordinator position at some major school and do well there. I don't really know. I know he was helping Powledge last year but I would think he didn't do it 2 years in a row. I would think he would have cut him loose if he had to train him another year. Anyway if he is actually going to be HC next season I would think some defensive staff openings would be announced tonight or tomorrow with signing day over.

Yes he called plays on defense this year for second season in a row. He basically threw hard work at the problem but it didn't work but seems to me to have made him miserable.

What makes you think an FBS decision maker is going to look at his complete lack of player development here and his swiss cheese defensive units and give him another chance in that position?

He probably gets to rebuild the wreck of his career as a linebackers coach.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was encouraged to find employment elsewhere. I would bet we see several of our other defensive coaches follow suit in the coming weeks.

not really sure how this makes any difference. I could be wrong but if I recall correctly, Powledge previously called plays and we sucked so CDA made the adjustment to take over playcalling duties and we sucked even more. So now he's saying he will no longer call plays? What options do we have left?

Fred - we made him a wealthy man and he's an abject failure at almost every standard head coaches are judged m by. If he did the honorable thing and resigned, I'd be sympathetic. But as long as he sits there screwing us taking the 4.5 m annually, screw him.
