He was a poor defensive coordinator. Save the money...maybe the next guy will be better.

Dave has hinted about wanting Pow to seek greener pastures for over a season now: "of my staff, Matt is the most ready to be an HC" per a Spring Camp presser last year.

I think this is a win/win for all parties: Matt gets to chart a new course free from any baggage at Baylor, and Dave can hire someone with a fresh outlook who also happens to be bringing a dawg or two with him.

If we hire someone very young/inexperienced who is bringing no players with him, well, that tells us all we need to know too...

Too bad we couldn't just switch places with them for a season and see what happens.

that's what we did in 2023 and it wasn't working at all. Pow is a great guy, but I think this change really is best for both parties.

Speaking of changing places with somebody, I'd bet nearly 100% of us (regardless of what we write here) would do so with Texas Tech in a heartbeat, tortilla throwing/pizza delivery notwithstanding.

I meant Powledge as HC and Aranda as DC.

Probably wouldn't work, but it wouldn't likely be worse.

The RB injuries crippled this team and it's hard to understate the impact. Bryson was the most importantly player on the team with the possible exception of sawye and was never healthy. Dawson would have been a serviceable replacement but out for year. Basically lost our entire RB room slated to contribute for the year. On top of that sawyer was never healthy enough to run. On top of that we lost our OL coach. It was basically the perfect storm to torpedo the running game. The running game was the secret to the success of the team in 2024 second half after Bryson and o line got going. I think if Bryson and Dawson were healthy throughout the season probably ends up very similar to 2024. A running game even covers up many flaws of the defense because the other team has less possessions and defense has more time to rest. Go back to 2024 before Bryson got healthy and that's basically what we saw in 2025, in a nutshell. None of that on Spav. I know Dave's defense still underperformed despite all that which is why he fired himself but this in my view the biggest difference from 2024. A solid running game covers a multitude of sins.

This is a great post.

I'm glad you didn't mention any of the many key injuries on Defense too, or you'd get dogpiled.

Mention that Devin Turner (our biggest portal acquisition on D, All-B1G safety) was out for the whole season and Carl Williams IV was essentially out all season too, or that we had lost two of our other high-impact portalees on D for the season (Barnes & Jackson) by the first defensive drive of the OSU game.

If you do that you're a Dave Aranda lover and it will become a flame war...even if you go on to explain that yes it's Dave's fault that we didn't have the depth behind those guys to play decent defense for four quarters at a time, and so yes he's made enough mistakes to warrant an HC change...you'll still get dogpiled for acknowledging the impact those injuries had.

So I'm glad you didn't.
