News broke yesterday that Florida quarterback DJ Lagway plans to enter the transfer portal on Jan. 2, and he would be a great option for the Bears in 2026.

He is a Baylor legacy. His dad, Derek, played running back at Baylor in the late 90s. He was also the No. 1 quarterback in the nation for the 2024 class and a five-star prospect, according to 247Sports.

Plus, Lagway would immediately increase the program’s upside and give it some much-needed juice during what has been a terrible 2025.

I have to say I was unaware until yesterday that Jake Spavital was/is one of this year's Heisman winner's former mentors. Got my attention. At Indiana he had a real OL in front of him, so if that's the only missing piece here, let's get Lagway.

Spav has one of the top few QB resumes in the country. Baylor really has a lot to sell here if lagway is focused on maximizing his long term potential as a player, not to mention we are close to home and he is a legacy.

If we bring him in though he should wear his dad's six feet wide shoulder pads.

OL DJ was flying high, but Remember, he has not played well in 2 years, high TO rate, injuries, led a 2 year losing team, and, is he leaving to avoid competing, what's his work ethic, does he study film, how does he prepare himself for games? I hope Spav evaluates him as he would any other transfer and doesn't just fall in love with his last name and his HS reputation.
Folks, this is Pro football. Only go all in with players and coaches who have earned it, on the field. It's too expensive not to.

I agree with what you are saying except that we need to remember that Florida's schedule the past 2 years has been brutal. OL wasn't the best and Lagway was playing well, for a freshman, until he got hurt. I don't think Manning would have had a better freshman year than Lagway had.

I don't think we back up the Brinks truck for the guy but he's definitely a great player.

It just unfortunate that Dave couldn't see the importance of getting quality QB time to others this year - missed out on evaluating what he has in his QB room.

Lagway to me has always looked like a really raw player from his high school days up until this year. He's one of those players that needed to sit for a couple years to work on his fundamentals. His technique is sloppy which leads to accuracy issues. You can watch the tape and see that he makes some NFL throws, and I think he's better running with the ball in his hands than people give him credit for. If we do land him, I hope spav incorporates more designed runs into his game plan.. I'm just really, really curious what his price tag is. He is not a guy that I would sink 20% of our budget into (he was supposedly accounting for 10% of Florida's entire NIL budget)

Lagway won't be much of a factor when he is gone for the season before the conference schedule begins from playing behind this O-line. We have too many holes in the roster to burn up the budget on one guy.

As said before, I would rather use that money to man multiple positions of need, particularly the bigs on both sides of the line. I think you get more progress strengthening more positions to higher quality than going big on a star qb or "skill" player that will require a much higher price and likely sacrificing quality of the overall crop of transfers.

But I woudn't hate it if Lagway ended up here. He's not the most polished qb, but has a real gun and probably could do well in this offense.

Florida went 8 - 5 with a bowl win in his freshman year. And that was with one of the hardest schedules in the country. He led the team to some big wins down the stretch.

Yep. Lines need serious attention

Thanks Chuck. I stand corrected.

It's my understanding injuries hampered Dj this past year

The 1st priority should be the O and D lines. But keep in mind who the coach is. Dave will go out and over spend on a QB and be left with Pennie's to fill the massive holes on both LOS.

There's a lot of rearranging peas on the plate with the transfer portal. Unfortunately, for us I think we're exchanging bargain bin players for bargain bin players and expecting massive change. With something like 15 starters/would be starters we have to replace, I don't have much hope

I believe that's the Kirby Smart philosophy which has worked out pretty well. I agree that should be the focus, but I'm hopeful that signing Lagway could entice more NIL contributions and get the attention of the linemen we need.

Right. The tendency is to allow "good attrition" when you don't want to pay guys that didn't move the needle. Then they probably pay more to get the same kinds of players, hoping they will be an improvement. Probably not a bunch of change either way. Just different names.

I'd just like portal players that don't get injured before the first or second game of the season.

baylor has enough money to spend on a qb and spend on the lines. without getting a high end qb, our ceiling is very low.
IowaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Our ceiling is low because both the offensive and defensive lines are trash. You have to build the lines first and foremost. Otherwise everything else is just window dressing
Bearsalwayswin

I agree, but many people on here are under the assumption we can't spend on the lines and on a qb.

They need to double-down on the OL and DL, and high percentage dudes, because they aren't all gonna hit.

Then get a qb, but one that has tools and SOME experience that has a chance to be a decent starter, but not a big money guy. Open up the position to competition and put the best one on the field behind a good line and a much improved defense, and that's your best chance.

Look at the quarterbacks that beat Baylor this year, although, naturally against Baylor's defense. They weren't all that great.

Get a guy like Lagway and put him behind a still "meh..." OK and no Cameron or Trigg, and it's going to be really ugly.

Get the big dudes.
