Question is just talent evaluation / development potential / fit. None of these kids are bound to anything. They're being the mercenaries that the system creates. It is what it is. Don't take it personally.

We have spent probably close to a billion on athletic facilities over the past dozen years we are not lacking resources.

For the ATH dept. it's close to half a billion - it's a full billion if you include all of the other campus additions (Foster Biz school, the Hurd Welcome Center, renovations, etc), but your point stands - Baylor has demonstrated a deep commitment to its athletics department.

People scoff when I say that I feel Baylor has a real chance to land in the eventual D1 Super League (caveat: it's gotta be at minimum 48 for us to have even a shot, at 64 I think we're a lock), but I say that in large part because of the infrastructure investment the Uni and its boosters have made...

...even for Bluebloods on-field success is cyclical to a degree, but program support is 24/7 year after year. Baylor's been demonstrating that for two nearly two decades now (at least on the Uni/booster side, our game day attendance is another story).

Does he seriously want to play at this point? Because if he did, he would have hit the portal at least a year ago. He just wants another bag, he doesn't care if he plays or not.

which is why I don't think Stein brings him to UK.

And if Stein doesn't, I think he'll suddenly 'medically retire' rather than face live bullets at a lesser P4 or even G5 school for a fraction of the NIL he's been making this last few years.

Not a bad gig if you can get it, honestly. Kid will have already made more than most Americans will in their lifetimes.

I didn't like it, either. But as far as his body of work, there isn't really one to show. He might be really good but not as good as the NFL draft picks he played behind, or at least not ready enough.

Nobody knows.

He is certainly not solely to blame for snubbing Baylor the way he did. And under the circumstances I can't say either way whether it was a mistake for him.

If he has the talent, he would be worth a shot. Being the next really good Baylor starting qb would be penance enough. Haters would get over it and see reality for what it is. He's a kid that got overwhelmed by the machinery of big money recruiting by the biggest money programs.

I saw him soon after he committed. Unless he's beefed up significantly, he's both shorter and a lot leaner than Sawyer. I guess it could be a good and bad sign that he stayed at Oregon so long. You gotta trust Spavital evaluating existing talent, and how he would compare. Hopefully Finn was a learning experience.

I think it will come down to Athletic budgets and min. annual investments for NIL. I can see the Group of 64 to be top tier athletic programs that support all major sports and willing to work within a min. spending limit (similar to the Premium League) and those schools who are invited must be willing to spend $$ to remain in the league. There are likely only 60-64 schools that can support Football, Basketball, Baseball, etc.

I think there are a lot fewer than 60-64 that can afford....and justify.....to be in your premium league and actually be competitive when there are schools like Tech who have flat out stated (today's DMN article on Tech and Campbell) that money is no issue and hundreds of donors will provide WHATEVER is necessary to win at the highest level. There are many schools in P4 now that can't do that and in all honesty should not be doing whatever it takes to win against the "haves".

Oregon buys QBs every portal season because Novasad is not it.

Very limited thinking. Oregon does it because they want the quickest path to playoff/championship, they can buy anything they want, and that means buying more proven game-ready quarterbacks for immediate use.

They have the luxury of not having to develop, or even give up depth. They get it all, and it shows in their records and the NFL draft.

I don't necessarily disagree with your rationale here, but their current starting qb, Dante Moore, was not a "proven game-ready quarterback" when they got him. He had started a few games at UCLA, but was extremely volatile on the field and was not at all a Will Howard type transfer where he was a missing puzzle piece to insert into a championship roster. He had a lot of athletic potential based on his high school background and recruiting pedigree (five star, #1 qb in his class, etc.), but was not exactly the example of what you are stating.

But to your point, Oregon can and does exactly what you are describing. But that hasn't necessarily been their situation at qb this season. With Dillon Gabriel, that was exactly right.

I'm not sure why you would go for Novosad when you could pick up someone like Josh Hoover who I can almost guarantee is better

Novosad and his family also burned whatever bridge they had when he decommitted at the last minute, so I would be shocked if it happened. I could see UH being an option for him with Shawn Bell

All I know about Moore is that Mel Kiper projected him his top overall 2026 draft pick if he were to come out. Other inline draft resources have him ranked as a first round pick. Of course, those things are what they are, but apparently there is a great deal of buzz about his NFL draft stock.

He was a guy that transferred out of UCLA as a backup and then sat behind NFL guys at Oregon, takes the starting job the following season and is not a stud draft prospect.

Oregon seems to have a good eye for quarterback talent.

Clown says get a guy like Hoover. OK, he would probably be good, but he's going to carry a pretty high price, probably a fairly inflated one that would cost the different of getting another OL starter or two. Maybe not as high as Lagway, but pricey.

I'm not pounding my fist or anything to get Novasad to Baylor. I really don't care if he comes to Baylor or not. But that's the kind of guy I think would be good to bring in much cheaper, and have more resources available to stock up OL and other positions. Dante Moore was a prospect very much like that when he went to Oregon.

A highly regarded redshirt soph type that studied under a qb rich program, and has physically developed and worked with and against top tier talent in his own every day in practice, just may be a good place to find a bargain that can come in and start and be pretty successful.

The main reason Novasad is the example here is because we've heard of him and know his recruiting history. There are likely several more out there in the portal that might be worth a shot to compete for the starting job against our current qb room.

The other route they might take is a lower level guy who has had success and some hype at his level. We've already seen how that worked out with Finn. We saw how it worked out with a one or two guys under Rhule, whose names I can't even remember. Sawyer came in with very little game time and was clearly the better qb, well in everyone's eyes, except for maybe...

I'm just not crazy about paying up on a transfer qb starter for this particular team that doesn't seem close to a Big 12 championship. They need a lot more than a qb with lesser support around him, isn't going to push the needle that much.

Novosad has shown nothing at Oregon. If we take a transfer QB it'll be someone with starting experience. We already have a P5 QB bench rider in Walker White. Why take 2? One of our 3 QBs is likely to hit the portal but we have a solid freshman coming in and again will likely take a dude with some reps to at least push the competition. Unless it's DJ Lagway I don't see this staff promising a transfer QB the job after Finn.

White was a true freshmen at Auburn with a senior QB on the roster in Payton Thorne (who was Hugh Freeze's chosen transfer QB), and then he was behind 2nd Year Sawyer this year. Calling him a 'bench rider' seems a little harsh.

If we don't think he's got QB1 stuff at this point, we'll probably lowball an offer to gently encourage him to seek a spot elsewhere and he probably would at that point. But I don't think that's going to happen - he's a tank of a kid with a cannon arm and I suspect we're comfortable rolling with our QB room as is if DJ's price tag is just too high.

ah, that's fair.

Sawyer's periodic accuracy/timing struggles (footwork, release angle etc) this year, which were far from the team's biggest problem, were all the more perplexing given Spav's prior success as QB coach/Playcaller OC. Perhaps they were in part injury-related.

Flipside of that coin is that Spav's track record gives me reason to expect a bounce back whether that's with Walker, Ed, Nate, Quinn, possibly DJ, or even a surprise transfer. If we've got Washington, Pendergrass and Knighten all back in the fold and all healthy, our RB game will bounce back as far as the OL can take them.

If the defense is as bad as last year it doesn't matter who is under center… winning will be difficult. The line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball will likely determine what happens with Aranda. Without Cody Campbell throwing around money like a drunken sailor you don't typically flip your trenches in a year.

Fair point. I wasn't touting him, it was more "any reasonable QB" could come in and continue the domination of Shiplap U by the toads. With all of the available QB's in the portal I picture (analogy) BU looking through the window of the toy store knowing it's overly religious parents put a damper over what could be. Friday will be a day of "elation" or like the little kid at the toy store just facing reality.

yeah that's true...that's why Jackie declaring sucks, and if we lose Samu & Blackwell that really sucks too.

Then again, according to Klanderman himself in his introductory presser, he was running a new defense last year that blended 4-2-5 in with the 3-3-5 he'd been running for a while. The purpose of the evolution was to adapt to the offensive trends he's been seeing in the B12 since '21 or so.

Also per his interview, he discussed how that system really started gelling in the back half of the season. So ideally, he knows exactly what sorts of players he needs to fit that scheme. Those may not be the same type of dudes that Aranda's vision required (in short, NTs may not be nearly as high on his list).

FWIW, 4-2-5 is what Patterson ran at TCU...so I'm hopeful that Gonzales and Klanderman will mesh well; Gonzales' unit showed marked improvement from the previous year, so if this shift is more into his wheelhouse all the better.

The bittersweet irony of this situation is that we might have a pretty great portal haul if they're great fits for this new scheme, but not know it because the new guys are all fairly unknown or unheralded. That would be a very Baylor outcome to make a leap forward in a year in which everyone including our own fanbase expects us to suck royally.

You see the buzz around Hoover. A: Baylor wasn't going to spring for that, and B: Hoover wasn't going to make a lateral move or worse. He was an UP transfer.

In Baylor's current situation, you better get good at projecting potential in a hurry and find a qb that will come here at a modest enough price to fill so many other necessary positions.

Lagway likely would only come here if the market soured on him and dried up. And in that case, how bad do you really want him?

I agree. Most UP transfers are looking for a shot at the big prize in college football, playing in the biggest games, and perhaps auditioning their talents for the NFL.

It's going to be hard for Baylor to attract transfers like that from programs at their own level or higher.

Money is a factor for a lot of them I'm sure, now that so much money is being thrown around. But I think most want to get closer to the biggest big time they can get.

Baylor's best hope is for quality lateral transfers that come with some of the new coaches, or just leaving a program with more depth at their position, buried in a strong roster, with Baylor offering a chance to start. That's why I theorize they should look for a less experienced qb, and other players, talented but having lacked adequate opportunity, that can possibly end up being home runs.

Yeah, we will have to pay. Always have to pay. As we saw with the QB from Toledo (?) a few years back, there is no guarantee that it will translate to a higher level. I think the big thing is that whoever it is HAS the measurables, no more Shapen's that are good for a game and beat up for the rest of the season.

Oregon did offer him a lot more money than we could, but contrary to popular belief, it wasn't just about the money. People were getting into his ear about what a big-time prospect he was and how he was too good to play in a conference where his marquee matchup would be against Texas Tech or BYU. I do blame Dave more than anything though, because he agreed to Novosad's demands to not take a quarterback in the previous class. It's one of the most dumb things Dave has done that he doesn't get enough heat for IMHO. Dave really is a guy that you could sell magic beans or Florida swamp land to

This recruitment situation really was a microcosm of DA's time at BU.

I don't know. Maybe Novosad knew something we didn't at the time about Decaf Dave and his staff. Outside of Dallas Baker and Khenon Hall, I've not seen anyone on this staff who can actually develop players.

Oregon did offer him a lot more money than we could, but contrary to popular belief, it wasn't just about the money. If you have a guy really making those kinds of demands, especially as a true frosh that hasn't proven anything against real cfb competition, I'm looking elsewhere for a guy that is more "bring 'em all on" and bets on himself.

But I don't know what to believe about stuff like that behind the scenes.

And any coach that doesn't try to recruit a qb every year needs to go back to high school coaching.

Of course, you do. Aranda is responsible for everything negative that happens. If he recruited someone else and Novosad left you would blame him for not honoring his words.

I hear there is a Volcano erupting in Italy. Etna going off. Damn Dave...
