In the last 2 to 3 years sports gambling has become more intertwined with sports than ever before. You can't watch a broadcast anymore that is not sponsored by some gambling website... even during broadcast now they will mention the sponsors and what kind of live odds you can get on the game in play.

It's really annoying… I don't think it's going anywhere though. It especially makes me nervous for young dudes between 18 to 25 that think they can "beat the house" and may not yet have the self-discipline to play within their bankroll means.

Anyway… I see interesting stories related to it from time to time and just wanted to start a thread where it can be shared.

Seems like bball is an easier sport for point shaving since one player can have more direct impact on the outcome than football....unless you are able to compromise a QB.

I feel like every NFL commercial break is gambling or grubhub/uber eats

I got some friends who sports bet and it's literally all they talk about now. It's getting old, these dudes place bets everyday. Its a serious addiction

To me, the larger issue is prop bets, which get called "prediction markets" and other obfuscating phrases. Basketball is always ripe for point shaving, since the margins are so close anyhow, and who cares if you miss a jump shot or two?

Prediction markets allow open wagering on things like "Will the first play be run or pass?" or "who catches the first pass?". I wouldn't expect it to affect the top talented teams too much, but if you're gonna be the starting QB at say Oregon State, would you be willing to take $50k to make that first play from scrimmage a quick pass to your designated target? Hey, it might even be legit during the game. If it isn't, well you're not the first QB to misread the defense.

"Prediction Markets" and "Retail Investing" are euphemisms for "taking money from suckers".

Several Abilene Christian basketball players are currently embroiled in a point-shaving scandal.

The hypocrisy of getting in bed with the sports books and then acting shocked, outraged and dismayed when the natural consequences of doing so play out is just too much.

The gambling stuff is ****ing gross. Always has been.

Article in the Times this AM about Don Jr being part of some of the companies involved in the prediction market along with the imminent release of Truth Prediction. They don't need that business to make a **** ton of money, but I wonder if it makes it tougher on any regulatory challenges to the market.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a big story in the next couple years about NFL referees fixing games. I've seen enough bad calls to make me raise an eyebrow, and I've noticed that they start to happen when a game is starting to get out of hand i.e. outside the point spread. As an aside, pass interference should not be a spot foul penalty. Too often it completely changes the outcome of a game on something very subjective

Yeah, I get this completely. It really does feel like betting is everywhere now, and sometimes it's hard to just enjoy a game without odds or promos constantly popping up. I actually don't mind sports betting or casino-style games myself and play them occasionally, but always in moderation and more as a bit of fun than anything serious. When it's treated that way, it can add a little extra excitement without taking over the experience. I do think it's important for people to be informed and not go in blind though, which is why I tend to look things up beforehand on pages like https://casinosanalyzer.com/free-spins-no-deposit/free-chips , especially to understand bonuses and limits. As long as it stays balanced, it doesn't bother me, but I agree it shouldn't overshadow the sport itself.

There was a report by one of the big networks this week about underage gambling. It's not just young men, it's boys. And it's freaking gross.

There is so much money in sports betting these days that it wouldn't surprise me for every Black Sox like scandal that is discovered and prosecuted that there are multiple ones that aren't.

And I agree about the refs. There have been some really sketchy calls at key times over the past few years, and they aren't getting paid like players.

Yep. Buy cheap index funds and keep your hands in your pockets.

I've never had a gambling problem. Losing makes me too angry. That said, I do understand some other vices, and personally I'd have a real moral dilemma with making money off of gamblers because I would know I'm mostly taking money from addicts who can't really afford to lose it.
