I wouldn't bother with this argument with Thee. As he will throw out there from time to time, he was a backup/walkon on Teaff's 1980 squad, and he seems to feel that the achievements of Briles and his squad of edgy inner-city kids somehow took attention away and eclipsed the achievements of his Teaff squad. In his mind, this validates the idea that little ol Baylor can't achieve big things in the modern era, so he has concocted this fantasy where we apparently invent a Time Machine and go back to the 1950s where the entire team is lilly white Church of Christ, traditional Catholics, evangelicals etc. Basically a division two fantasy league where we're still somehow nationally relevant and making millions in revenue

Hey Homey!

That's a weak effort trying to disparage one of Baylor's best teams ever. That team had 16 NFL draft choices (only counting Rounds 1-7 to make it fair). A couple of All-Pro. A Hall of Famer. That talent matches or exceeds anything Baylor ever produced.

Don't run down the Lone Star Conference!!! Your boy now runs Eastern New Mexico after spending some time with Guelfi Firenze & Mount Vernon HIGH SCHOOL.

I litterally wrote the exact same thing about TU 11 years ago when the 2015 Bears beat Texas Tech 66-35 and this racist dumbass came on this board ranting and raving about Briles defense having the nerve to give up 35 points to Patrick Mahomes and the Red Raiders......as if his teams would have done any better.

Patrick Mahomes will be a first ballot Hall of Fame NFL player. I wonder how many Hall of Fame Quarterbacks (the old man who yells at clouds) faced in his time at Harvard on the Brazos?

The way he talks on here, he reminds me of some of the older guys who I worked with at my retail job I had one summer. "coach put me in for two plays when Billy needed a water break. Ever heard of a guy named Mean Joe Green? I totally destroyed him on both plays, but the coach didn't see it happen, so he pulled me back out……Joe totally asked me after the game why I wasn't the starting quarterback……"

I swear the character of Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite was based on him.

And the expanded playoff system has given the haves the the exact illusion of fairness in the system that they wanted. I am all for us joining a less competitive conference, but the conundrum is that if you unhitch yourself to this wagon, you lose out on most of your money

What I said on this very board was that a Briles defense, master minded by Phil Bennett, had better hope the Baylor offense gets the ball last because we could not stop an old widow woman from scoring on us. Mahomes was not the only QB in the nation we groomed for Heisman trophies!

Let's see…..I'll help you out a little bit…….I tackled Heisman winners Earl Campbell, George Rogers & Hershel Walker. I played against Doug Flutie. No QB ever dominated a Baylor team I played on like just about every QB that salivated over playing a Briles/Bennett team. 3rd & long for our Briles/Bennett era opponent? No problem! Move the chains.

Mahomes still has a lot of football before you start anointing him as a HOFer.

By the way……our defense in 1980 held Texas Tech to -35 yards rushing in Lubbock. For the entire game.

Not to stir the pot, but it would've been interesting to pit the 1980 BU squad against BU's 2013 /2014 squads.

The 1980 squad would get massacred. Football in 2013 was vastly different than football in 1980. A lot more emphasis on speed, and the no huddle passing attack would be like something they had never seen. Now in all fairness, if you handed the 2013 squad the 1980 playbook and said you can only run these plays, I'm not sure how it would turn out either - it depends somewhat on which team would have to be the fish out of water

Yeah it would. That 2015 Red Raider offense would roll the scoreboard over on almost any 1970s/1980s team. As would CAB's Baylor teams.

The game completely changed. If you go back and look at old game film from, well, really anytime before the 1983 Miami team with Kosar and Schnellenberger it really was 3 yards and a cloud of dust. That was really the start of it.

Not that modern offenses didn't exist in the NFL, the Chargers and Air Coryell come to mind but they just never seemed to make their way down into the college and high school ranks.

I would add that strength and conditioning has changed a lot as well. I doubt 1980 teams had strength and conditioning programs with coaches and facilities worth millions like what exists in the modern era of college football. They really have everything down to a science nowadays

Wouldn't be competitive. The 1980 team lost to the 3rd place team in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assoc. (San Jose St), so I don't think they'd stand much of a chance against the dominating back2back Big 12 Champs.

Hilarious!

Art's team would never get the ball back. Our NFL backfield with a few NFL linemen pushing Bennett's horrible defense all over the field would eat up the clock.

The 1980 defense, led by Pro Bowler & HOF linebacker Mike Singletary and All-Pro Vann "the dentist" McElroy (because he knocked teeth out of receivers coming across the middle) would absolutely murder those receivers.

Count the # of years spent in the NFL by the 1980 kids and then the years by any of the Briles & Bennett boys.

Give the 1980 team the facilities, weight room, nutrition and it is a no brainer. Don't get your junior high football panties in a wad. Art did put together some great teams.

Wait a minute…..those teams lost to Oklahoma State & West Virginia bigtime and then got dog drilled by a commuter school called UCF and the proceeded to put up the most embarrassing collapse to Michigan State in modern bowl history.

We did not lose a conference game much less lose a huge game 17-49.

I'd put that 1980 coaching staff to absolutely control the ball and the game.

Mike Singletary probably would have knocked a few RBs out of the game. Or Vann McElroy.

The 3rd place team in a 3rd rate league bent you guys over and embarrassed you fools on your homefield.

30 points given up to a team with a weight room equivalent to a 1A high school.

'I might add that one of my teammates won the NFL Strongman competition at least once and maybe a few times.

I recall many times the old "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" description being used on these supposed modern era players.

The human body has limits and I've seen perfect physical specimens that could not play a down. You can only get so strong and so fast. You have to have some desire and football knowledge and techniques to excel. A Bennett defense couldn't even get lined up right a lot of times.

San Jose State doesn't bother me. 6 turnovers are hard to overcome .

We regrouped and pummeled Arkansas 42-15 on national tv the next week. Drilled Rice and then destroyed UT in the final game. We held UT to 138 yards total. They only had 9 first downs and 35 yards rushing. Bennett's defenses regularly gave up 35 yards in 1 play. Usually on 3rd & long.

That 1980 team did not have to cheer for a conference foe to give them a championship at the end of the season. We went undefeated in conference play. Nobody (except SJSU) could beat us. And Alabama of course.

You might want to read up on Baylor football history.

Obviously I'm proud of ALL Baylor teams. There has been some good ones and a few great ones over the past 100 years. I admire ALL of them. We did more with less.
