DJ Lagway (Baylor)

This is the one I was not expecting. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound signal caller transferred from Florida this offseason after a turbulent couple of years in Gainesville. It looked like his confidence was shot and his body may have been in even worse shape with really big durability concerns.

Despite that, Lagway has made quite an impression on scouts who have been through Baylor this offseason.

According to one area scout:

"No bull****, Lagway was the best quarterback I saw all August, and I saw all the top 6 in next year's class. I went in there ready to throw him in the trash. He is easily the best arm talent of anyone that I saw this offseason, and it's not close, to be honest. But then again, he was a 5-star for a reason. This offseason was the first one he's ever had, at least a full one. I was more impressed with how decisive and accurate he was. He just has never been available for a complete offseason, and he's beginning to turn heads."

A different scout said:

"The Lagway stuff was funny, because I kept passing scouts who kept saying how good he looked for like 2 weeks before I visited, and I'm like, yeah right. And they were my second to last visit. When I got there, it became apparent that they were telling the truth."

Talent has never been the issue for Lagway, but can he be consistently available, and can he be consistent as a decision-maker on the field? Those are the questions worth keeping a close eye on.

Do you think something like 8-4 with a bowl win to push it to 9 could keep him? I think nine is the magic number, either by bowl win or regular season, eight and a loss in a bowl, we've seen this song and dance before. It would really be if you think he can can rising at that point, but it's still a crapshoot at the end of the day, and I personally would can him if I were the AD at that point.

I have zero insight… just a random Internet forum dude.... but I suspect if he gets to 8-4 they would not fire him. I think the administration really likes him as a person and 8-4 would be enough for them to "sell" that he has helped the program turn the corner and things are heading up and bring him back next year. Kind of like what we were hearing after the 2024 season.

That would mean in his tenure he's had records of:

2020 2-7 (it was that weird Covid year)
2021 12-2
2022 6-7
2023 3-9
2024 8-5
2025 5-7
2026 8-4

I'm not advocating keeping him...and I don't even expect him to get to 8-4.... but if he did that seven year track record is not too far off the types of records Grant Teaff was putting together. In 20 years of coaching at Baylor Grant had just three seasons with over 8 wins.

My guess is they didn't do it because they would have to get another set of helmets. Apparently our current gold helmets are the old set of yellow ones

I personally think it's nice to have a touch of our modern flashy chrome look threaded into an otherwise traditional look. It connects both eras.

I don't have logic in this, but I 'feel' like Gundy will come here and ultimately destroy BU football into a Rice U program status.

We could definitely do a lot worse than Grundy... assuming he still has the drive. But, he is kind of a lightning rod and I don't think that is something BU admin wants to bring in.

In 2021, Dave Aranda led Baylor to a Big 12 title, NY6 bowl win over Ole Miss, and their highest ranked finish in program history.

However, the years following that season have been a struggle in Waco.

True, but Grant was coaching an 11-game schedule in the old SWC with UT, A&M, Arkansas. We also often had some tough non-con games, and he had 3-4 winning teams that didn't make a bowl game (which were much harder to come by back in the day). If you consider all that, plus our pathetic resources then and how bad we were when Teaff arrived, I think it is clearly more impressive than Dave's modern record in the watered-down Big 12.
