Happy 19th anniversary to 'The Rant." I was the producer/photographer for Gundy's show back then, and we shot a majority of the show after games. I remember calling my then boss after this, telling him we may not have a show this week. #ImAManIm40 pic.twitter.com/MaeKhaimC0

Wow. I had seen their stock has been trending down but didn't realize it was so bad. What is driving it? Too much competition? People not wanting to spend that much on shoes/clothes? Both?
Before the kick:#TXST observed a moment of silence for Jason Landry. Landry is a student who would have turned 27 this year. He went missing on December 13, 2020 driving from San Marcos to Missouri City for holiday break.

That's actually a bit surprising. I wonder if it represents a change in direction. Most of the recent additions to the American were almost exclusively about the city they were in -- Birmingham, San Antonio, Houston, Charlotte, Miami area--none of those schools were chosen for the quality of their athletic programs. They were all about city size.
Now James Madison (who has run a very good FCS program) comes from a pretty small city and gets an invite. Seems like a definite change of perspective.

Generally not in relation to conferences. Someone just posted the record of Rutgers and Maryland against ranked B1G teams (both are 0-fer). There were multiple teams that would have been better adds to the American than UAB, Charlotte or FIU, but they went with location. Very little of conference realignment has been driven by the success of the programs.

I watch the first round of the basketball tournament, and I'd watch the first round of a 24 team CFP also.

Absolutely. A 24-team playoff is going to be awesome. Every other level of college football has had a 24-team field (or larger) for years, and they're super fun.
The great thing about an expanded field is that we can finally let meaningless bowl games die (or just become showcase exhibitions for the G6) and allow the playoff to serve as the only postseason for all P4 teams.
And once you have an expanded field, you'll see a hierarchy of achievement established like what we have in the NCAA tournament, where a trip to the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight is virtually universally celebrated.
For some teams, making the field will be a huge deal. For others, winning a game will be massive. For most, a trip to the quarterfinals or semifinals will be program-changing. Etc., etc.
