Baylor football unveiled a new throwback uniform on Thursday, paying homage to the look the Bears sported during the late 1980s to early 1990s. The retro combination will be worn for the Big 12 opener against Colorado on Saturday, Sept. 26, at McLane Stadium.

The throwback features a gold-chrome helmet, green jerseys with a bear claw on the shoulder pads, and white pants, recreating one of the program’s most recognizable looks from its final years in the Southwest Conference and its early seasons in the Big 12.

Baylor had one of the most iconic uniform wardrobes in the country from the early 2010s through 2019. In recent years, the Bears have slowly but surely started bringing back fan favorites, albeit with a slight modern twist.

In 2024, Baylor debuted anthracite jerseys and helmets, and last year, the Bears added a gold-chrome helmet back into the rotation. That trend continues in 2026 with the return of the throwback uniforms.

I don't know what point you're trying to make or what it is your trying to accomplish. We're just talking about uniforms in a thread about uniforms.

Incessant naysayers are quite uniform in airing their gripes constantly. So does that mean those gripes belong in a uniform thread???

Very nice! These are the school colors. Not the current version that was forced upon us by the lady from TCU.

that's completely false actually. Jovan had very little to do with the United campagin in 2019.

This has been explained a thousand times. And our school colors didnt change in 2019. We have always worn the same shade of gold we do now. These throw backs even feature it just like the unis in the 80s that insoired these did. Vegas gold and old gold have never been our school color gold shade. Hence why all our other sports have worn all gold unis for decades

Nobody really cares what Pantone codes our school uses for branding.

Baylor football has used actual gold for most of its history -- and exclusively once it became possible to put a good looking shade on pants and jerseys.

Anyone above the age of 8 grew up watching Baylor football in gold. That's how they remember it and that's how they like it. Fortunately Doug McNamee is one of those people, so I think we have a good shot of returning to what the vast majority fans want and enjoy.

I don't know about most fans, but most real fans want insist that their team to be the one other schools least want to schedule on their homecomings.

This goes without saying. But it's not a problem that can be solved with uniform designs.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for uniforms that better represent Baylor University and its program history/tradition.

These throwbacks do that extremely well -- much, much better than the last two Nike redesigns.

What it really goes without is doing.

Look ... we're not going to fix Baylor football in a uniform thread.

Could not possibly have said it better myself. BU football needs fixing, not redecorating.

I'll settle ... as they did during the Singletary era ... with gold helmets and yellow elsewhere ... as is used on these throwbacks. Give me these uniforms forever, and I'll be a happy Baylor Bear.

I agree completely with you here. Except I think we should use gold on jerseys and pants as well. Nevertheless I agree with what you have said about gold.

However I haven't done a 180on the AD yet just because of this uni, even if it was an actual new uni to be worn most of the season.

Again nevertheless, good post.

The two things are in no way, shape or form mutually exclusive.Or even particularly related.

No one who is happy with this uniform design is endorsing our current level of play or the current state of our program by saying so. Most of us have spent the past three years agreeing with you in more appropriate venues for grievance-airing.

That doesn't mean we have to wallow in a perpetual self-flagellating state even on threads unrelated to our play.

Another sub-standard season where we field and average or worse product remains the most likely outcome for 2026. If that happens, we'll almost certainly have a new coach next year.

And I will want his team to wear these uniforms as their standard game-day look as well.

All that remains is to make them permanent.

The response seems overwhelmingly positive, from what I've seen. It won't hurt fan enthusiasm. I suspect they will be used more than once or twice this season.

Well, they've brought back the retro W-L record, might as well bring back the retro digs.

I actually like the retro uniforms.

Across twitter with national college football accounts and even rival fan bases the response is overwhelmingly positive.

Not making this a permanent change would seem to be a huge self own.

Gold is $4600 an ounce and heading up.

Even Notre Dame has gone chrome dome.

so you simply ignore all of our logos, all of the apparel, all of the branding, all of our uniforms across our athletic department, all of the memrobilia, all of the media guides and programs, ect ect for decades? Our school colors didnt change in 2019. The old gold helmets that then became vegas gold in the 2000s were never the baykor official gold. Yea football wore that for years as a helmet color but that doesnt change the fact that our school colors are what they always have been.

But then again you said you ill ignore history for what you have decided is history so no use in arguing with a dumb ass. Im reminded once again why this free forum should be deleted. Subsidizing your existence is almsot as bad as paying for welfare with my taxes. You're welcome

the current yellow needs to be thrown on the trash heap of history. whether it's true to some kind of fact of history (inspired by dandelions or something like that) is something no one cares about. It's just bad branding from the Matt Rhule era when we were trying to create distance from the previous brand.
