DJ Lagway Expected to Miss Second Straight Game Against Louisiana Tech

Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is expected to miss this Saturday’s matchup against Louisiana Tech.

Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is doubtful and expected to miss this Saturday’s matchup against Louisiana Tech, meaning junior Nate Bennett will make his second straight start, SicEm365 has learned.

Lagway suffered an ankle sprain on the first drive against Auburn last Saturday. The Florida transfer gutted it out and threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns, but his limited mobility contributed to two costly turnovers and forced Baylor to condense its playbook.

In Lagway's absence, Bennett threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-36 passing against Prairie View A&M in his first career start, while adding a 17-yard rushing touchdown. He also turned the ball over twice.

During his Monday morning press conference, head coach Dave Aranda gave the latest regarding Lagway, saying, “No update, other than he felt great yesterday. We have a walk-through later today, and we expect him to go and expect him to go on Tuesday.”

Bennett took all the first-team reps this week, however. The hope is that Lagway will be fully healthy going into Big 12 play against Colorado.

The Bears (1-1) will close non-conference play against Louisiana Tech (1-1) at 3 p.m. on Sept. 19 at McLane Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

I'm just guessing that they jumped the gun, being overly optimistic about how far he had healed. Sprains can be tricky. They never should have suggested he was expected to play.

I suspected the injury was worse than they were letting on. It is not unusual for an ankle sprain to take weeks to heal. And it's one of those things that you really can't rush, or it will only get worse. I'm getting the feeling that this season is going to be a long one. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for Dave

Agreed. Solid coaches do not sign players who have a history of injuries.

I would also add that it's not like Lagway was amazing at Florida and the only knock was that he got hurt a lot. Frankly, he looks like a perpetually raw player mainly because he's dinged up so much and can't play meaningful snaps

It definitely seems like poor judgement to talk it up way early in the week. Most coaches will tend to keep such things in question until they know for sure a guy is ready to go. Even if they are pretty sure he's going to be ready, they tend to not be in a hurry to act like he's playing.

We had to take a risk that DJ would pan out despite injuries --- just like we had to take a risk with Hosea. Whether it pays off or not will be known in big 12 play --- LA Tech game of little importance now. I would bet you $5 he will play against CU game, even if it means he will be on one leg.

Actually, we didn't. That's how opportunity cost works. We could've used the seven figures that we paid him to find a cheaper quarterback and then use extra money to bolster other positions. I don't dislike lagway, and I think he has talent, but it's obvious Dave wanted to make a splash after a crappy season by bringing in the five star legacy player from SECSECSEC, and this is the risk he accepted. So far, it has not paid off

It's not about "making a splash," With the money Dave had to spend, if he just played it conservatively he would have had a higher floor but lower ceiling. He needed to be riskier to at least have a chance of a higher ceiling, because a mediocre season would not be good enough to keep his job. It made perfect sense why he went for broke. Doesn't mean it will pan out --- that's why it was a high risk bet, both on DJ particularly and the transfer philosophy as a whole.

Lagway is 21 years old. For that matter, so are many other college players who are pulling down big bucks.

And so are many other college players who get caught doing dumb stuff.

Nor does maturity suddenly materialize when a player goes to the NFL.

We fans are in the midst of a mess that college football has created, where our emotions rise or sink according to what young people do. (This includes the entertainment industry as a whole, not just the CFB segment of it.)

My only comments are that I hope DJ will be fully healthy for the Colorado game. And that Nate Bennett throws for 400 yards against Louisiana Tech, while our running backs totally run wild.

PS--Plus that our defense stuffs La. Tech.

If he can walk every where and is running on the ankle then put him in. Doesn't feel like he actually wants to play. Be hurt and rake in the money. Pro career isn't looking like a sure thing so cash in but stay safe. Looking like Bennett is our new #1 QB.

If Lagway is feeling any residual effects from the injury, I'm glad he's sitting out.

We'll beat Louisiana Tech without him. I want him as healthy as possible as soon as Big 12 play starts.
