Inside Baylor’s Effort to Bring a Beloved Look Back to Life

Baylor football will wear a helmet stripe for the rest of the season, sources told SicEm365. The Bears debuted a gold-white-gold stripe on their green helmets in the win over Prairie View A&M on Sept. 12.

Head coach Dave Aranda pushed for the change, but it’s unclear what colors the stripes will be on Baylor’s white and anthracite helmets.

Baylor has traditionally worn helmet stripes, but the Bears eliminated them during the uniform rebrand ahead of the 2019 season, opting for stripeless green, white and gold helmets instead.

The Bears also wore a stripe on their gold-chrome helmets as part of the throwback look for last weekend’s matchup against Colorado. Those helmets featured 10 stars to honor legendary head coach Grant Teaff.

Aranda and the Bears (3-1, 1-0) will head to Tempe to take on Arizona State (2-1, 1-0) at 9:30 p.m. CDT on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Mountain America Stadium. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

Good call. The helmet stripes should have been standard with this uniform set from the beginning.

But let's cut the nonsense and just make Saturday's uniforms permanent. The reaction to them has pretty much been universally positive. Do the right thing.

Rare win for Dave. Pales in comparison to winning but details matter and this is a good call.

Why would a HC remotely care about some dumb uniform minutiae like this?

This is a weird PR piece. I don't think Aranda or any coach cares

I'm not comparing Aranda to Briles in any way...but Briles was pretty involved in the Baylor look and brand.

From Gemini:

Yes, Art Briles was directly and heavily involved in Baylor's uniform transformation. He used the flashier aesthetic as a deliberate strategy to change the culture, boost recruiting, and modernize the Baylor Bears brand.
His involvement went beyond just approving designs:

Driving the Rebrand: When Briles arrived in 2008, Baylor had traditional, basic uniforms. He spearheaded the initial updates, such as pushing for the addition of a white helmet in 2009 to break away from their traditional look.

Nike Tier 1 Negotiations: Briles personally announced major updates, including a 12-combination overhaul in 2011. By 2013, he leveraged the team's on-field success to negotiate Nike "Tier 1" statusan elite designation that gave Baylor access to the same experimental designs and cutting-edge technology typically reserved for schools like Oregon.

Using Gear for Media Hype: Briles actively used new gear to generate media buzz. During the 2013 Big 12 Media Days, he famously placed Baylor's new chrome-plated gold helmet on the speaker's podium before his press conference, joking about how "shiny" it was compared to his own head.

Social Media Reveals: Briles frequently utilized his own social media presence to tease and debut upcoming uniform elements (such as the 2015 steel-grey alternates) directly to potential recruits.

Following his firing in 2016, the university consciously shifted back to simpler, traditional green-and-gold looks to distance the football program from the flashy "new money" aesthetic synonymous with the Briles era

Cool I guess. The throwback from last week was way better than this, though I would just bring back the gold helmet from times past like we had in 2010 or thereabouts

That is almost the complete opposite direction though. Briles was trying the Oregon-Nike marketing approach.

This... is completely unnoticeable and insignificant.

Why wouldn't the HC be deeply involved in his teams look. I mean why would a HC have to push for only a stripe? Who the hell is micromanaging us into the worst look in our history, exception last week and the last game of last season.

It wasn't just the stripes on those metallic gold helmets, it was also the lines of stars next to them that made it look completely awesome.

I think this is to help Lagway tell the difference between receivers and defenders.
