Last game Baylor 23, Colorado 13 (Sept. 26)
Line Arizona State -3.5 • O/U 49.5 • as of Oct. 2

Why This Game Matters

  • First true road game of 2026 (Auburn was a neutral site in Atlanta)
  • Night game in Tempe after ASU’s bye; Sun Devils opened league play with a 24-17 win over Kansas in London
  • Baylor has held all four opponents under 20 points, the longest such streak since 2005
  • DJ Lagway is a week removed from a rusty return: 19-of-39, 221 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT vs. Colorado
  • Initial injury report is clean — no Bears listed doubtful or questionable

Series History

  • Arizona State leads 2-0
  • 1990 in Tempe: ASU 34, Baylor 13 — Baylor’s only previous trip to Tempe
  • 2025 in Waco: ASU 27, Baylor 24 on Jesus Gomez’s 43-yard field goal as time expired
  • ASU this year: W vs. Morgan State, L 48-20 at Texas A&M, bye, W 24-17 vs. Kansas (London)

Keys for Baylor

  1. Survive the environment. Aranda called it loud and electric at night. First conference home night game for a lot of this ASU roster.
  2. Get Lagway on schedule. Efficiency has to jump from the Colorado line.
  3. Win up front. The ASU offensive line is still searching. ASU’s Cutter Boley (736 yards, 9 TD) is the guy to pressure.
  4. Keep the scoring defense intact. Plenty of bend but don’t break for Baylor in 2026. ASU is built to drive on offense. Be better.
  5. Finish drives. 23 points against Colorado will not be enough if the Sun Devils get their home offense going. Don’t leave points on the field.

Players to Watch

Baylor: QB DJ Lagway • RB Dawson Pendergrass • WR Gavin Freeman, Jayden McGowan, Dre'lon Miller • OL Koltin Sieracki • LB Travion Barnes • S Bo Onu, Micah Gifford • DL Hosea Wheeler, Traevon Mitchell

Arizona State: QB Cutter Boley • RB Kyson Brown • WR Reed Harris • K Jesus Gomez • HC Kenny Dillingham

Yeah, the anti-Dave crowd have the shakes. 2 more wins, bowl eligible. Only blemish a 1 foot loss to Auburn in Atlanta... A lot of fetal positions...

This is a bad take. No one cares about a close loss, and bowl eligibility in the current big 12 is not a big accomplishment. Standard this year should be eight wins minimum

BS. Its a bad take because it hit a nerve. 8 wins?? Who cares about a number, it has to be tied to some accomplishment.

Bowl Eligible is first goal in any Conference, it is a positive. The loss and how it happens plays into Bowl selection, so it does matter. After Bowl eligibility with no bad losses, Conference Championship game participation is the next notch. Etc...

8 wins may be good enough, may not. May need more. It may win the Conference. It may mean nothing. Auburn is a good loss, on the road, premiere Conference opponent, going for it on 4th down. Bad losses hurt, good losses help with Bowls.

And yes, there are some that wouldn't give a crap if we made the Playoff. More interested in if Eastern New Mexico rights the ship.

merely getting to six wins in the current big 12 is not a big accomplishment. End of story

A lot of people care about the number of wins. Most football fans, coaches, the cfp committee. You might be the only one who doesn't. I know you're making a point but I disagree. In 2026 bowl eligibility is a low floor and many Baylor fans see the situation differently considering the past 4 years.

The players won the Big 12 and Sugar Bowl in spite of Dave.

I'm convinced the players and coordinators might do something again in spite of Dave this year.

But it's still in spite of himself unless he strings together consistent years.

Who said it was? It is step 1, as in it is a multi-step process. You have to get to 1 to go to 2. NEXT step is bowl eligibility. I would prefer a 7 win team in the B12 Championship to a 10 win team ending up in the Armed Forces Bowl. Context matters. All I want is the chance to play into the Playoff. 7 wins like OSU did it or 12, could care less.

I don't care who the HC is. If Aranda wins, I am good. So far this season, the guy has given no reason to complain.

The HC does get credit for wins, just like they get hit with losses. This BS that the Baylor won in spite of the HC is just that BS.

A 7-5 team will not be playing in Arlington. Any team that cannot defeat the creampuffs on their ooc schedule will not win against 7 conference opponents. It is highly unlikely that a team with 3+ conference losses will be there either.

I agree on Aranda's performance so far this year.

It is an example of the total context. 7 win teams have made it to Conference Championships and with automatic selection could go to the Playoff.

You guys do what you want, I don't see value in an arbitrary number. 8 or 9 wins should not guarantee keeping the guy, just like 7 wins in the right circumstances shouldn't guarantee firing.

I do believe there are good losses and bad losses. Auburn was a good loss. BU did not lose face or standing the way tthey played.

All valid points. But I still don't see a 7-5 team getting to Arlington this year. The 2 best teams will have better records.

In 2026, 6 wins won't be enough for most Baylor fans after the past 3 years. They want more. My attitude is wait and see. In the mean time, Sic 'em Bears!

But overall, crappy football day.

Normally I would be hitting a trail somewhere looking for birds and nature photo opps, but is soaking and major sloshy all over.

Gonna be a longass day.

Glad Baylor didn't host a home game at McLane today.

Hey, Dia del DougO I also walk admiring the wild life and getting exercise at the same time. Cameron Park , Lake Waco equestrian trails are my favorites! Always something new to see and enjoy, ready to walk today if it's dry enough.

I agree. Just saying that some of us that seem to be "pro-Dave" may have higher standards than some of the win 8 or else crowd. I would be for canning him if he wins 8 and embarrasses us in a Bowl. Or, we end up in Ft Worth again. This team looks like it can do more.

I really appreciate Aranda's patience but sense of urgency with the players.

I think this was a good opportunity to build trust between the players, the coaches, and the system.

No matter what organization you are running, those in the organization need to have confidence in the organization and that the systems the organization are utilizing will result in success.

That's difficult enough to prove when you are in a conference where there is so much parity among the competition.

As posted on a different thread, awesome game by Dave, coaches and players. This is the Aranda we want.

I have no special love for Aranda, but he does seem sustainable at BU personality and money fit. So, it would be nice to not have to go through the search...

I've been pretty consistent that I think this program would be best off if Dave Aranda could figure out the football side of things and get back to meeting a reasonable on-field standard.

A) I agree that he's a good personality/culture fit for our university and has done a very good job of building a healthy environment that players and coaches want to be/stay part of, which is a big advantage in the transfer portal era.
B) Every coaching change is a crapshoot, and sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don't.
And C) I really, really like this coaching staff that Aranda has built, and think we can win big if those guys are kept around and allowed to build.

I've been ready to move on from Dave two or three times in the past three years and think he deserved to be fired on multiple occasions. But I still think the best-case scenario is for Dave to get the ship righted and avoid the potential turmoil/unknowns of a coaching change. Have I always had faith in his ability to do that? No. But I do think the hire of Klanderman as DC and his willingness to step into more of a CEO role eliminates -- or at least mitigates -- a lot of his biggest weaknesses as a coach.

Dave's been given way more leeway than he would have at virtually any other school. But there is a scenario where our patience with him pays off handsomely in the end. It's not one I would have bet on last year and I probably still wouldn't bet on it now. But there are a lot of coaches who would have made significant progress with seven-plus years to learn the basics of head coaching. And love him or hate him, I think Dave Aranda has shown an uncommon willingness to learn, adapt and improve. That process is frustratingly non-linear, and it feels like we're dealing with a first-gen AI bot sometimes, but the guy is earnestly curious, introspective and willing to grow, all of which are positive qualities in his profession.

Ironically, I think this program is in a pretty solid spot right now if it can just win enough football games to stay there. But at this point, the wins are what matter. Vibes aren't even secondary IMO. They're only even a factor if accompanied by wins.

TCU scored a TD late in the half to tie the game. Second half should be interesting.

If the toads can make the BYU game competitive or win, it'll be a guaranteed loss for BU.

Not really. All it means is that we likely match up better with BYU than we think.

TCU is a lot like us so far, stout defensively and questionable at best on offense.

But their ability to shut down BYU's run game has allowed them to completely bottle up BYU's offense. We have the defense to do that same thing.

As for the TCU game, we'll probably be looking at something like a 17-14 game one way or the other. Neither offense is likely to do much against the opposing defense.

History hasn't been kind to BU/toads. Last 15 or so years BU hasn't fared well.

You bring up a good point. The leeway he has been given. But, if you look at the College FB Hall of Fame, many of those coaches had periods they would not have survived in today's environment? How many good coaches get fired before they get it? Maybe that is not a bad thing?

The on the field has to match the off the field, but it would be nice to be able to build on something rather than being a stepping stone.

Look it up--This was my prediction for this game:

Da Bears 31
Da Devils 17

Da Bottom Line:

Lagway runs 4 times for 34 yards in the first half, which is enough to bother the ASU defense and help the rest of our offense.

We rush for 168 yards total and pass for 300. Freeman doesn't repeat his hurdle but he scores and takes pressure off our other receivers.

5 sacks and 12 TFL by our defense. We lead 28-10 going into the 4th quarter.

CDA haters continue hating.

I loved the win tonight. But I'm not ready to stop complaining about CDA just yet.

The TCU game is the next huge one. If we win that one at home, people will have no choice but to get excited about this season and rally around this team.

The importance of tonight's win really can't be overstated. It's just like the Tech win in 2024, which completely changed the trajectory of that season. We have a chance now to go on a serious run. The only difference -- and it's a huge one -- is that we haven't already dug ourselves a hole the way we did in 2024.

We can actually do some pretty special things if we continue to improve and win games. But we got to win the TCU game out of the bye week or this balloon loses its air quickly.

I'm already excited about what the team can accomplish this year, but my belief in CDA will take much longer to return. Guessing there are some like me out there who separate the team's success from the head coach. Not saying that is the right thing to do but that's the way some probably see it. Great win last night though. They could go 10-3 playing like that.

This is a good take and pretty much where I'm at. Dominant win last night, absolutely. I think most would agree that Arizona State appears to be a bad team. I also think it's reasonable to say that it's going to take more than one dominant win to build up trust in a coach that was sub 0.500 last year and is hovering slightly above 0.500 for his tenure at Baylor.

TCU is not a good team, but they always play Baylor well. With two weeks to prepare and paying them at home, it should be a win

I'll be honest Clown, I'm not even sure going 11-2 would completely restore my confidence in the head coach. It's not that I hold grudges forever, but for me it takes about 30 years to get over things.

11-2 (or even 10-3) would absolutely mean Dave gets another year, but anyone who even breathes the word extension before he has 3-4 such seasons in a row should be sent to College Station.

Agreed. I understand why some fans want more this year, especially since it looks more possible than it has in the past couple years.

Unfortunately we won't play a ranked team until November. The crazy thing is that we could be undefeated in conference play when we arrive in Provo. That would be wonderful!

Yes, those are among the best. I would add a few others, especially October 11, 2014 and the amazing comeback to defeat TCU. Of the best 6 games from the past 15 years, that was the only one I was able to attend. Obviously, that is a subjective list but I think most people would agree: OU 2011, K State 2012, OU 2013, TCU 2014, OSU 2021, & Ole Miss 2021.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
