As I understand it, in searching we hire an outside firm and they screen possible candidates and present a list to the AD.

I've heard the same and it's ridiculous if you think about it.

The AD hires someone else to do his job.

To me its gross incompetence and mismanagement. Hiring those firms is an expensive endeavor.

All of that time and money should be saved by the AD doing the job they are paid to do.

If they can't do it, they shouldn't be there.

Rhett Lashlee of SMU, currently ranked AP #23, or Jake Dickert at Wake Forest, currently ranked AP #17. Both know that they will end up in a lesser ACC leftover conference after 2030 realignments are announced in 2027/28. So this will be an opportunity to get out before the ACC drops in status along with their funding resources.

Just being ranked is a rather low bar.

I know of Lashlee, but is he a good coach or are they just buying players? I don't know much about Dickert.

Has either won a conference title? Are their teams consistently good?

Lashlee is a great coach and a great culture fit. We should 100% hire him if he would come, but I don't he will unless he decides he wants to build something at a true Christian university,.

I think most every school uses the same couple search firms. I don't know if they do much more than just gauge interest via agents.

An imperative criteria needs to be to call every one of our big donors and ask them, "this is who we are interested in hiring. Is this somebody that you would give money to to buy players?" If the answer isn't a euphoric yes, we need to keep looking

He did great at Mississippi State until Florida lured him away with big dollars and he couldn't quite replicate success there. However, my cousin's in Mississippi, who are all Bulldogs really like the guy and said he did a good job there. He is currently at UNLV, but I think he's available.

This program is no longer in a place where it can poach a successful P4 head coach.

So it is going to be a HC from FCS or G6, an OC/DC from P4, or a P4 guy someone else let go. That's pretty much reality.

Our hires since the BOR screwed up the CAB situation have followed this pattern.

So think of names like the Montana State guy, Danielson, Traylor, Kinne, or promoting Klanderman at the end of the season. The list has gotten shorter than it was a year ago and they chose to let Morris go elsewhere.

Matt Campbell is rapidly wearing out his welcome at Penn State.
This program has never been in a place where it could poach a successful P4 coach.

If that is the case, those firms have quite a racket going.

I'm thinking that a fan that does his due diligence is going to compile a similar list to these search firms.

To me, it's another data point that many university administrators are neither trained nor experienced enough to properly hire for jobs in athletics.

Well yeah, these are academics, they are not business people. Hiring and firing is not their strong suit. But ultimately, somebody has to put out feelers, and that's where the search firm comes in.

Agreed, and he would be an under the radar hire right now I MO. I think he wants to get back with a major conference and get on the bigger stage so I think we could lure him to Waco but again my Mississippi cousins all absolutely adored the guy.

Mullen was 69-46 over nine seasons at MSU. I think his best season was about the time of ours, 2014, 10-3.

He was 34-15 over four seasons at Florida.

I'd take him over most of the recommendations and the talk of hiring someone away from money bags SMU is hilarious.

Mullen is a good coach. He wouldn't be my top choice, but I'd be content with him as the hire.

I didn't include Mullen because he brings quite a bit of baggage and I find it hard to believe Baylor will overlook it.

1. At least 9 of his players, mostly during his tenure at UF, were accused of domestic violence and assault towards women. The most publicized case during his MS ST tenure was Jeff Simmons. He was found to have repeatedly punched a woman who was on the ground. A video of this incident surfaced before his enrollment. The school allowed the kid to enroll and play anyway.
2. Show Cause Penalty issued by NCAA in 2020, for infractions at UF

He never won a conference title, either. But that seems like a moot point considering the issues above.

What about Spencer Danielson (Boise State)?

Pros
- Won 3 straight Mountain West championships from 2023-25
- Produced a Heisman finalist RB
- Boise State currently leading the Pac-12 and G6 playoff race
- Boise State AD is the former Baylor Deputy AD
- Devout Christian (See Linda? A well-performing Christian Head Coach!)

Cons
- Only experience is in the G6 level
- Accomplishments above propped up by weaker MW/Pac-12 schedule
- Got whacked by Penn State in only CFP appearance so far

I don't think College of the Ozarks has a football team.

If Baylor wasn't a Christian university we wouldn't have retained Scott Drew. Same for Grant Teaff. If we're ever going to have an all-time great coach on our football program, faith will almost certainly be a factor. For a great coach there will always be someone calling with more fortune or glory.

And Lashlee happens to be a person of faith --- not saying he's going to take less $$ for baylor, just saying that's going to be a factor for anyone we end up building a statue for like Drew and Teaff.

I'd be happy with him based on the small amount of googling I've done. I just don't think there's any way he leaves Boise State. I think Boise State is able to pay their coaches pretty well relative to how difficult the job is. Waco is also a much different city than Boise. Honestly, if we wanted him, our leadership would've been smart to go all in and bring him and Jeramiah Dickey as a package deal last year

Edit: my only real reservation about Danielson is that he took over a well oiled machine at Boise State, and it is the only place he has ever been a head coach. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's a horribly difficult place to win. But I do think he appears to be a pretty good coach, just don't know much about him

This is a very good suggestion thanks. I don't have to spend a lot of time researching him and compiling the pros / cons.

After looking at some videos, his system reminds me a lot of Chryst's Badger teams. Run first, play action, eat the clock. Except Chryst teams used a lot more screen packages.

I've added him to the list!

Have any of the former boise coaches done well when going to the next level? I remember Harsin being a hot name but never doing well. It's so hard to judge someone's coaching when they are the biggest fish in their pond --- this is the lincoln riley issue. He has all the tailwind when he took over and has never shown that he can punch above his weight class. Give me a Chris Kliemann arc any day over that.

Speaking of which, if I were the AD, my very first call would be to Chris Kliemann. Though retired that dude is only 59! He outcoached Aranda with less going for him at K St., and we could bring him in and maybe even retain Klanderman (and possibly even Spav if desired). That would be a homerun in my view.

Klieman moved on. Not the other way around.

He cited health issues (very high blood pressure) and the stresses of dealing with constant roster flux + NIL.
Lastly, he mentioned being a coach for 35 years and wanting to pivot to a normal life and spend time with his family

OK. I stand corrected. In light of that, I still do not think he would work out here. Coaching at Baylor is not going to help his blood pressure
