What about Spencer Danielson (Boise State)?

Pros
- Won 3 straight Mountain West championships from 2023-25
- Produced a Heisman finalist RB
- Boise State currently leading the Pac-12 and G6 playoff race
- Boise State AD is the former Baylor Deputy AD
- Devout Christian (See Linda? A well-performing Christian Head Coach!)

Cons
- Only experience is in the G6 level
- Accomplishments above propped up by weaker MW/Pac-12 schedule
- Got whacked by Penn State in only CFP appearance so far

I'd be happy with him based on the small amount of googling I've done. I just don't think there's any way he leaves Boise State. I think Boise State is able to pay their coaches pretty well relative to how difficult the job is. Waco is also a much different city than Boise. Honestly, if we wanted him, our leadership would've been smart to go all in and bring him and Jeramiah Dickey as a package deal last year

Edit: my only real reservation about Danielson is that he took over a well oiled machine at Boise State, and it is the only place he has ever been a head coach. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's a horribly difficult place to win. But I do think he appears to be a pretty good coach, just don't know much about him

I agree that Boise is a machine, but to Danielson's credit, he did take over that machine after Avalos had kind of driven it off the road. He deserves some credit for getting the program back closer to its historical standard in an era where G5 programs have never had it tougher.

Like I've said with others, Danielson wouldn't be my first choice, but I'd be perfectly happy if he was hired.

Mike Gundy
Lincoln Riley
Jeff Traylor

What's your issue with Traylor?

The guy has almost a .700 win percentage and no losing seasons at a program that was 41-55 all time before he arrived.

Traylor has a significantly better record at UTSA than Briles had at Houston when Baylor hired him.

Have any of the former boise coaches done well when going to the next level? I remember Harsin being a hot name but never doing well. It's so hard to judge someone's coaching when they are the biggest fish in their pond --- this is the lincoln riley issue. He has all the tailwind when he took over and has never shown that he can punch above his weight class. Give me a Chris Kliemann arc any day over that.

Harsin is/was a good coach. Auburn was just a disastrous fit, and he was basically undermined by their boosters upon arrival.

And Chris Petersen was a damn good coach at Washington.

Seriously now…

Rhett Lashlee of SMU, currently ranked AP #23, or Jake Dickert at Wake Forest, currently ranked AP #17. Both know that they will end up in a lesser ACC leftover conference after 2030 realignments are announced in 2027/28. So this will be an opportunity to get out before the ACC drops in status along with their funding resources.

Just being ranked is a rather low bar.

I know of Lashlee, but is he a good coach or are they just buying players? I don't know much about Dickert.

Has either won a conference title? Are their teams consistently good?

Lashlee is a great coach and a great culture fit. We should 100% hire him if he would come, but I don't he will unless he decides he wants to build something at a true Christian university,.

He's probably not leaving SMU for GCU or Liberty.

His record hasn't been very good at South Carolina.

He is a veteran coach in a place that hasn't been much better than Vandy in terms of recruiting. He has to recruit against Clemson. I suspect if you put him in a different situation he would do well.

Even known greats like Holtz and Spurrier have a comparatively low ceiling at South Carolina.

Klanderman
Traylor
Maybe Spav (he's got HC experience unlike Dave).

I want a culture guy that can do less with more and will stick around a while. I think Grant Teaff and Scott Drew will always be the playbook for Baylor to punch above it's weight class.

I would try to find a Bill Synder, Chris Klieman type. Maybe Traylor, but I don't know him as well.

We might need to wait for Michael Allen to get a little gray in his beard for the kind of coach I have in mind.

The real question is what does Matt look for. Consider this:

(1) he's a bleed green and gold guy. Baylor ties might weigh heavily if there is such a candidate.
(2) he's very financially minded. I suspect he will want someone with demonstrated NIL success and managing the new world. He knows well one of our basic problems is failing in that area from the jump.
(3) character and the Baylor Christian brand matter to him. Coaches that dated grad assistants need not apply, which eliminates maybe 10% j/k.

Assuming a change is made and from what I've seen on the field, Doug needs to do everything within his power to keep Joe Klanderman. I'd let Klanderman pick the next head coach or be it.

I think I disagree a bit philosophically with trying to find a coach that will stick around a long time. I feel like we did that with Aranda, and it didn't work out. A problem with our current staff in my opinion is that it's full of nice guys that have no ambition. I think ambition in a professional is a good thing, I just don't want them to be so ambitious that they start telling everyone that they won't be at the school long i.e. Matt Rhule

Why would we let the defensive coordinator pick the next head coach?

Speaking of which, if I were the AD, my very first call would be to Chris Kliemann. Though retired that dude is only 59! He outcoached Aranda with less going for him at K St., and we could bring him in and maybe even retain Klanderman (and possibly even Spav if desired). That would be a homerun in my view.

Kansas State moved on from him for a reason. I do not want a retread

Klieman moved on. Not the other way around.

He cited health issues (very high blood pressure) and the stresses of dealing with constant roster flux + NIL.
Lastly, he mentioned being a coach for 35 years and wanting to pivot to a normal life and spend time with his family

Sure but that's how every good movie starts.

I'm not understanding the joke?

I'd love to be a fly in the room on that conversation.

"Hey Klanderman. We aren't going to give you the HC job, but we'll let you pick the new HC".

Here's my coaching list, in no particular order:

1) Jason Eck
2) Jeff Traylor
3) Spencer Danielson
4) Hugh Freeze (I know, I know, but he can recruit, has some skins on the wall, and the media is obsessed with him, for good and bad. We need relevance as much as anything - he brings that in spades).
5) Billy Napier
6) Andy Roderick (not sure he can be a real candidate, as I think he's LDS)

Traylor is very loyal ... to the point that I'm not even certain he has aspirations beyond building and sustaining the UTSA program. He has held two head coaching jobs his entire career, spanning two decades, with a couple of college assistant jobs in between.

I know he's passed up some opportunities to stay in San Antonio. His wife apparently loves it there.

Just go back and see which posters on the free board had Curt Cignetti at the top of their list and hire them to do a search instead of the committee that recommended CDA.

Rank Candidate
1 Spencer Danielson
2 Rhett Lashlee
3 Dabo Sweeney
4 Casey Woods
5 Blake Anderson
6 Mike Shanahan
7 Todd Graham
8 Mark Tommerdahl

Priorities faith based it's a requirement for our school as it should be

I would also say good Texas ties or willingness to engage TXHSFB coaches and their programs, going and finding the Joeys Davids and Shawn's to bring them on staff.

Someone who emphasizes discipline and all 3 phases of the game.

Lastly I think an explosive offense, that is up tempo is a need for Baylor, it's exciting and enticing for recruits (traditional and portal), up tempo allows us to make the D play base and levels the playing ground when our athletes aren't as good as some of the other schools we play.

Baylor needs to stop searching for the shining star or the golden ring coach.

Traylor at UTSA always has his team pumped up to play. They play fast and beyond their ability. He's a coach who fights for his team during the game. His Texas high school coaches connections are outstanding for recruiting. I doubt he reads Bernstein Bears books. His loyalty factor means Baylor might be able to keep him. I believe he's looking to advance his career over UTSA. Might even get him for less money than the so-called next superstar coach flying by.

But PLEASE get rid of Amanda

G6 is the place to find a young stud O minded HC. Look at the HC's at Auburn, Florida and UCLA.
Teaff, Briles, Drew and Kim all came from lower conferences.
It's not rocket science.
