Ten Things: Baylor at UTSA

September 8, 2018
19,198

Baylor made the trip to UTSA on Saturday and here are the ten things I noticed during the game.

  1. Facebook? I didn't notice at the game
  2. Savor still sucks.
  3. Ballsy move by Rhule with an onside up 17-3
  4. Bad move dropping Jalan McClendon back with 38 seconds on the clock
  5. Too many drops by the WR position
  6. If you can't trust Connor Martin, who can you trust?
  7. Charlie Brewer has taken command
  8. Glad to see Clay Johnston back
  9. Defense surrendered 236 yards prior to the final drive
  10. Still plenty to work on when film is reviewed Sunday
  11. Enjoy the road win, this wasn't Kansas

I wonder if CUSA reviews officiating film, or do they just say, "Meh"
and let it go.

I hope and pray that we more to offer on both sides of the los than what we have shown.

This team has silly amounts of underutilized talent that wont be here next year. If we only win 4 or 5 games this year, we are going to have real issues filling some important shoes on the DL and and wr.

The high school level of organization has unfortunately creeped over from 2017.

Might be generous to denigrate TX hs football, maybe its a Penn thing.

#11 - Not bringing the band was inexcusable at the highest level. Our team deserves to have the fkn band there...3 hours away and they can't send the band? Mickey Mouse management.

Surely Nixon is keeping much of our Offense under wraps until Conference play.

I have a cousin by the name of Nixon who recently retired from the UTSA School of Dentistry. My cousin can call a better game than your Surely Nixon can.

True story bro. You might want to check out Castle Hills First Baptist Church if you don't believe me.

Hey, I'm NOT a Nixon fan. I should have phrased my comment like. "I sure hope Nixon is saving a lot of our Offense for conference, because right now it sucks.

We're cool. I'm just proud of my cousin and what she has done with her life.

Maybe Surely Nixon can follow suit.

Good for her. No sarcasm. Have a good rest of your weekend.

Almost 500 yards of offense.

I guess I was hoping that there's something in the run game that Nixon's holding back on.

Run game was good last week and anemic this week. May not have the o-line strength yet. It does need to get better, I think last night it got better when Ebner and Lovett got the ball and attacked the outside.

UTSA wanted us to run at them... we struggled. As you mentioned, better on the outside and we were successful in the passing game. We need the outside and over the top threat to open up the middle...

Very much agreed.

Then why did we do a revers qb throw back play in the third quarter? Surely that is not slated to become a part of our normal vanilla offense, is it?

11. Two unsportsmanlike penalties on one drive after getting near the red zone. Inexcusable.
12. Great crowd of BU fans (including myself). Loud and proud.
13. Props to Brewer. He was running for his life the whole night and still made plays.
14. Taking two timeouts in the first quarter because we can't get a play in to the QB. Again, inexcusable.
15. BU not panicking. We were up by 7 and methodically marched down the field a couple of times.
16. No more rotating QB's. Make a decision. It impacts cohesiveness.
17. No band for San Antonio? Ridiculous.
18. Hurd and Mims (despite a couple of drops) were playmakers.
19. DB's taking bad angles for tackles. This has to improve.
20. Love the trick play / pass to Brewer. Let's open it up. We have the talent.
21. We looked confused. Players on offense and defense continually looked to the sidelines with their hands up.
22. A win is a win, but Big 12 play scares me. ACU and UTSA are gashing us in the running game.
23. We have doubled our wins from last year.
24. Not a fan of all white jerseys. Bring back the metallic gold helmets.
25. UTSA "fans". Wow. Let's just say that many were overserved (or they had a few before the game). Feisty.

BU is 2-0. Statement of the obvious: Duke is a critical game.

I'll skip repeating the good things, because they have already been said. I'd like to add and reiterate a few items that are a cause of concern, and how they all may point to a larger issue.

First, the unsportsmanlike penalties. Why are our players acting like juveniles at times? (i.e. see the Hurd taunting penalty, for one). Is this junk allowed in practice?

Second, the timeouts. When you burn timeouts, your are cannibalizing your potential final offensive drive in the first and second half. Alternatively, when you save them, you are considerably boosting your odds of scoring on a final drive in both halves -- (it equates to an extra offensive series per game), and those two potential final drives can make or break half of your games in a season. Timeouts are jewels you don't give away lightly. Baylor coaching seemed confused and disorganized, leading to unnecessary timeouts.

Third, there were several plays where the receivers went one way and the ball went the other way. They were busted plays. They happen. I get it. But they seemed to happen more than normal. Yes, it's only the second game, but players are acting like they don't know the plays from the playbook. There were also timing issues on offense behind the line of scrimmage with the man in motion. Again, this means they weren't fully prepared.

I like our coach. He's a stand up guy. He has his positives. But all along, I was assuming he would be a highly organized coach and a detail-oriented coach. But I am seriously questioning this right now, especially considering with it how last year went, game after game. I hope this is just early season jitters and kinks. But I fear it's a warning sign of some level of ineptness on the coaching staff, and in the Big 12, there is little room for error(s).

But, hey, Baylor beat the betting line, and a lot of good things happened, so my feelings overall are mixed.

Lack of pace with play calling stopped momentum and was mickey mouse. Confusion about plays and player entries into the game was also mickey mouse. This kind of thing will get us killed in the big 12.
