I always thought the very rich paid their kids way through donations etc.

Of course they have and always will. It happens everyday and is not in the slightest bit illegal.

"Say, Little Susie here likes Art and has wanted to go to your school since she was a little tyke. I understand you need a new endowed chair in Art History. Perhaps we have some mutual interests."

or

"The Trustees of the family trust, which has been very generous to your school for a lot of years, would be very disappointed if little Johnny could not be admitted."

The truly rich do not cheat on tests, they bypass that step entirely. The people cheating are likely not really rich enough to play the game or just dummies.

That's how endowments are built.

Yep, it's "S.O.P." for almost every college/university out there that has even a marginally high standard for admissions to allow a certain number of "special admissions" for recruited athletes, the children or relatives of big donors, "legacy" children of notable alums, etc., etc. That's been going on forever. It's what amounts to a legal "gaming" of the system, but it is nonetheless, legal.

I think soccer, sailing, etc were used because it was easier to hide the students. BB, FB recruiting is followed by so many that it would be harder ti slide someone through.

Plus those are non-scholarship or minimal scholarship programs with little or no NCAA oversight. Coach gets paid to say "I need this kid because he does my sport and can pay his own way" then once they get admitted, if asked, says "he didn't pan out".

This stuff is as old as the hills.

I tutored a friend that had trouble with HIGH SCHOOL Geometry, while a HS Jr. He was accepted into some of this countries more prestigious state U's(Michigan, North Carolina) and had tuition paid at his ultimate choice.

People love to talk about privilege based on pure factors such as race, socioeconomic status, region, gender, etc, but here's the truth, it's largely a political favoritism game now. It's still bull****, I'm just saying that the Left is controlling this completely. There is no 'one' trait that is favored, but it's a combination, depending on the politics involved. LGBT and eskimo? Hello Pacific Northwest, U of Washington or Stanford. Asian and interested in a particularly obscure major? The Big 10 is looking for you. Related to political liberals? Brown University.

But combine poor, white, and from the South, and you will never sniff the Ivy Leagues. Grades and SAT won't get you there. They aren't interested in you, you won't be accepted.

We quit being a meritocracy long ago. The relevant stats on parents socioeconomic status and university education have said the same thing for 25 years at least.

IMO, there are probably better opportunities working and/or going to school in the UK and Europe than there are in NY or the NE in general.

This article is consistent with my work experience upon graduation and entering public accounting. No one cared where you went to school. Managers only cared if you could do the job within budget and get along with the client.

Because these bribers could hide their kids in the "athletic consideration" section of being allowed into school with grades that fell below the standard grades that would normally get you enrolled into school.

In other words athletes are given a special pass when it comes to incoming college grades. They can qualify because of the sports angle.

These dishonest parents were using the sports angle to qualify their kids, even though they didn't even play sports at all.
