Early Look: Matt Rhule's First Spring Roster at Baylor
Baylor will kick off Spring practices March 22 and end with a Spring game on April 22. Here is a rundown of the scholarship roster currently on campus.
Anu Solomon (6-2, 210, SR)
Charlie Brewer (6-1, 190, FR)
With two of the three scholarship quarterbacks on campus having extensive Power 5 Conference experience, only one currently has the confidence of the team on campus. Smith should go into Spring as the starter with Solomon pushing him for the starting role. Freshman Brewer will be able to get reps and learn the offense while the battle ensues.
JaMycal Hasty (5-9, 200, SO)
Wyatt Schrepfer (5-10, 205, SR)
Abram Smith (6-1, 195, FR)
Terence Williams returns after a strong season in 2016 where he gain 1048 yards on 185 carries and scored 11 touchdowns. Hasty should provide a change of pace again after gaining 623 yards on 118 carries. Freshman early enrollee Abram Smith will need to learn the system and gets stronger by the time practice starts. Schrepfer will provide depth and special teams ability when called upon.
Jared Atkinson (6-2, 210, SO)
Blake Lynch (6-3, 210, SO)
Pooh Stricklin (6-1, 185, SO)
Quan Jones (6-5, 215, SR)
Denzel Mims (6-3, 200, SO)
Tony Nicholson (5-10, 185, SO)
RJ Sneed (6-2, 190, FR)
Baylor will needs someone to step up to replace the lost production of KD Cannon and Ishmael Zamora as both left early to the NFL Draft. Platt is the leading returner in receptions (35) and yards (567). Two promising receivers bit by the injury bug, sophomores Blake Lynch and Pooh Stricklin, are the second and third leading returners. Lynch had 34 receptions for 404 yards while Stricklin had 13 receptions for 226 yards. From there the production is 13 total receptions spread across Jones (5), Atkinson (4), and Mims (4). All three will need to step up to secure time while Sneed gains strength and confidence and pushes his way onto the field. Nicholson could also push his way onto the field in the slot as well as handle punt return duties.
Sam Tecklenburg (6-3, 270, SO)
Josh Malin (6-6, 275, JR)
Tight ends were rarely used in the former offense, but Feuerbacher has a skill set which will be valuable to the new offense. Big things should be expected of the sure handed true Senior who had seven receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns on the season. Backups Tecklenburg and Malin will provide solid blocking depth at tight end and the H-back position.
Mo Porter (6-5, 310, SR)
Tanner Thrift (6-5, 320, SR)
Blake Blackmar (6-5, 350, JR)
Patrick Lawrence (6-6, 310, JR)
Tyrae Simmons (6-3, 300, SR)
Ishmael Wilson (6-4, 310, SR)
Josh Pelzel (6-6, 320, JR)
A new offensive line coach will inherit six returning players with starting experience. He will need to find a center with the recent medical departure of Sean Muir, but talent is solid across the board to provide holes in the running game and time for quarterbacks to make reads. A healthy Pelzel could allow Blackmar to slide into the center position. Simmons could slide into center as well and allow all the freshmen to redshirt once they arrive on campus.
Greg Roberts (6-6, 260, JR)
Jamie Jacobs (6-5, 255, JR)
Xavier Jones (6-3, 245, JR)
James Lockhart (6-3, 275, JR)
Four players return with starting experience, with Smith being the best of the bunch. The lone senior had 67 tackles, seven sacks, and 12 tackles for loss and Phil Snow will likely lean on him for leadership. Roberts came on strong to finish the season with 27 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss and had his best game in the Cactus Bowl. Jacobs could miss the spring following shoulder surgery allowing transfer Lockhart to get plenty of reps in his absence. Jones could fill a pass rushing specialist position after finishing 2016 with 24 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and one sack.
Bravvion Roy (6-2, 320, SO)
Byron Bonds (6-2, 290, SR)
Ira Lewis (6-3, 300, JR)
Andrew Morris (6-1, 285, JR)
Micheal Johnson (6-1, 270, SO)
Will Jones (6-1, 265, RSFR)
Tyrone Hunt saved his best game for the Cactus Bowl where he was named Defensive MVP. Hunt started five games in 2016 and should look to build on that through the Spring after finishing the season with 30 tackles, five tackles for loss, and two sacks. Ira Lewis is the leading returning tackler with 36, 7.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks across his seven starts. Roy brings the best size to the position and should get on the field with either Hunt or Lewis unless Senior Byron Bonds returns to his former ability after missing 2016 with an injury. Morris, Johnson, and Jones will push the returning starters and provide quality depth.
Clay Johnston (6-3, 220, SO)
Raaquan Davis (6-2, 230, SR)
Lenoy Jones, Jr. (6-1, 225, SO)
Jordan Williams (6-0, 220, SO)
Thomas Cletcher (6-1, 225, JR)
Deonte Williams (6-2, 230, RSFR)
Brian Nance (6-3, 245, SR)
Young is the leading returning tackler on the team with 93 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks in his nine starts. Young is returning from injury and should be ready to go for the Spring. Davis is the fourth leading returning tackler with 54 tackles over six starts. Much is expected of the former Rockwall Heath standout but he will have to fend off Sophomore Clay Johnston who had 26 tackles, an interception, and four tackles for loss during his two starts. Jones, Jr., Williams, and Cletcher excelled on special teams and will look to see the field more in 2017. Redshirt freshman Deonte Williams has some of the ability to push for playing time if he picks up the new defensive scheme.
Tyler Jaynes (6-2, 210, SR)
Eric Ogor (6-0, 210, SO)
One question for the Spring is will this position exist under the new staff. Blanchard can easily slide to the secondary or bulk up to move to linebacker after he recovers from shoulder surgery. As the second leading returning tackler with 73 tackles, nine for loss, and 1.5 sacks expect more excitement from Trigga. Former walk-on Jaynes primarily played special teams and finished the season with seven tackles. Ogor returns to the team after being suspended in 2016 by Jim Grobe for attitude issues and he will need to earn his the respect of his teammates with his play and actions.
Jameson Houston (6-2, 200, SO)
Verkedric Vaughns (5-10, 195, JR)
Raleigh Texada (5-10, 165, RSFR)
Jordan Tolbert (5-11, 180, SO)
The competition will be wide open this Spring with returning starter Arnold recovering from surgery. Former starters Houston and Vaughns will be challenged by redshirt freshman Texada who brings speed and coverage skills to the field after gaining weight over the 2016 season. Tolbert returns to the team after deciding against transferring once the new staff was hired.
Chance Waz (6-0, 185, SR)
Taion Sells (5-10, 190, SR)
Chris Miller (6-0, 185, SO)
Henry Black (6-0, 200, SO)
Rajah Preciado (5-11, 185, SO)
Jourdan Blake (6-0, 185, JR)
Jalen Pitre (6-0, 205, FR)
Safety may have the most competition this Spring with the return of three former starters in Hall, Waz, and Sells. Hall could find himself on the offensive side of the ball if needed as well. Sells returns for his Senior season after missing 2016 due to injury. Miller and Preciado are now healthy after missing the end of the 2016 season with injuries as well. Blake is still learning the position after moving from cornerback and could also be moved to offense to get the ball in the former quarterback's hands. Pitre will likely redshirt and gain strength and speed with the conditioning staff.
Drew Galitz (6-0, 205, JR)
Former walk-on Edmiston is primarily a holder on extra points and field goals. Galitz returns as the punter and could help on kicks in 2017.
Quarterback
Zach Smith (6-4, 235, SO)Anu Solomon (6-2, 210, SR)
Charlie Brewer (6-1, 190, FR)
With two of the three scholarship quarterbacks on campus having extensive Power 5 Conference experience, only one currently has the confidence of the team on campus. Smith should go into Spring as the starter with Solomon pushing him for the starting role. Freshman Brewer will be able to get reps and learn the offense while the battle ensues.
Running Back

All three will need to step up to secure time while Sneed gains strength and confidence and pushes his way onto the field. Nicholson could also push his way onto the field in the slot as well as handle punt return duties.
Tight End
Jordan Feuerbacher (6-4, 265, SR)Sam Tecklenburg (6-3, 270, SO)
Josh Malin (6-6, 275, JR)
Tight ends were rarely used in the former offense, but Feuerbacher has a skill set which will be valuable to the new offense.
