Given our non conference schedule anything less than 6 next season would be a disappointment. Could go 2-7 in conference again and get to five. Similar expectations to 2018 but we have more talent particularly on defense. Assuming we can piece together at least a mediocre big twelve offensive line.
I wouldn't pencil in BYU as a win just yet. That's a good program coming off a great season. They'll have a new quarterback (and potentially a new OC; fingers crossed), but they'll still be very competitive.
So will we.

Here's hoping our new OC knows their defense very well.

I'd like to say I'm very pleased with the OC hire and the confirmed assistants so far. I feel we could have done better than bell (someone with more direct QB coaching experience given the plethora of talent we have at the position), but that's just me. Kudos to CDA on the hire.

I see this as a great opportunity for Bell to develop under Grimes as a coach. Aranda and Rhule both saw something in Bell that hopefully can be fostered into long term success. People always make a big deal of how new coordinators help the players and don't often think about the position coach development. I'd imagine that Bell is as happy as the players are right now.

I can see Bell developing into a top notch position coach, then OC, then HC over time. It would be wonderful for all involved if he did that at Baylor, so long as it means Baylor winning games.

QB coach is a relatively low risk role, when you have a good OC and other offensive coaches around. Probably the best spot for Bell right now to listen and learn without having any detrimental impact on the team's performance. Good opportunity for him.

I was about to say ...

Shawn Bell's O-lines under Rhule vastly outperformed Wickline's last year, and his tight ends last season were the only position group on offense that outperformed expectations. Those may have been coincidences or just dumb luck, but they're indisputable facts.

Shawn has now survived a coaching change and a staff shake-up, so he's obviously an asset. To treat him as a liability that must be hidden away or covered for is absurd.

He got that assessment from CAB I'm sure after having dinner. I guess CAB isn't taking Bell with him to UT in a few years. Bell must have not given him his Houston game refund.

Your post was not very supportive. It basically was saying he's a JAG on the staff and we could hide him at the QB Coach position with no detriment. I was absolutely being supportive of him, because he's a pretty damn good coach in his own right. You should feel sorry for yourself.

You obviously have me confused with someone else. I've never preached "doom". Only that 2021 will be another pretty lean year....similar to any other rebuilding program. Now that Fedora and Brewer are confirmed to be moving on, there's a better chance of that process accelerating and having 2022 be the real assessment season.

I just believe 2021 can be 8-4. This has the feel of a great future that recruits and players will buy into. I think our team will be fired up. Hopefully, we'll have Grimes for 3 years.

Feels like the realistic ceiling at this point is 8, assuming we can land 2-3 more key contributors on offense. A lot also depends on who comes back at other schools. With covid rule and new transfer rules there is a lot of uncertainty as to what other schools will look like. At least ou Iowa st texas and tcu wil likely be picked ahead of us. Probably ok state and w va as well. Should be picked ahead of Kansas schools and tech. That would project to 6 wins if beat worse teams and no upsets. 8 would be an outstanding improvement and probably mean grimes is a head coaching candidate.

Asst AD for Football operations is leaving the program now as well, at just under one year in the job. This is Aranda's (literal) right hand man with running everything about the program's operations.....other than coaching players and calling plays. And it is important to make sure you understand that this guy has had a long term professional relationship with Aranda. A good one. They are friends. So, this move is foretelling.....just letting you know.

Stay tuned for an interesting Year 2 of Aranda's struggle to rise into a head coach. And Mack Rhoades continued below average performance as a D-I P5 AD.

Sic'em

All I want to know is . . . has Aranda by been talking to any NFL teams and has Rhoades given him a raise or extended his contract yet? After all, he did win one more game than little Matty did his first season.

If it means playing for the Big 12 title and a trip to the Sugar Bowl in year three, then by all means extend the contract.

Nice quote! I guess WINNING the Big 12 and WINNING the Sugar Bowl in year TWO improves upon this?

No reason to play around. Rhoades just needs to cut his losses and move on. He jumped out and hired a hot name at the moment, who unfortunately was nowhere ready for his first head coaching assignment. The result was a somewhat predictable debacle. Surely he didn't negotiate a large buyout requirement for a guy who had never been a head coach in his life. Just pay the guy out and move on.

It's amazing how some people were still obsessing about Liberty 2 years ago. As if 1 game, the very first one, defines a coaches entire career. It didn't fit Aranda or Briles & I doubt it did for Teaff. If certainly did not define Rhule's years at Baylor.

Thankfully I don't see any more of that crap on these boards!
