Baylor added a key piece to their roster Friday when Vanderbilt grad transfer Grant Miller (6-4, 300) gave his pledge to Dave Aranda’s coaching staff live during a segment with SicEm365 Radio. Miller signed with Vanderbilt out of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida in 2017.

Miller, who has two years of eligibility remaining after graduating from Vanderbilt in three and a half years with an degree in human and organizational development, started 16 of 31 games played from 2018 to 2020. In his final season at Vanderbilt, Miller started all nine games at center during the 2020 season.

As a grad transfer Miller held offers from Florida State, BYU, Arizona State, Texas Tech and others as well as interest from Alabama. Out of high school Miller was extended scholarship offers from North Carolina, Minnesota, Marshall, Southern Miss and other before signing with the Commodores.

Miller’s commitment is a big one for the Bears who will need to replace a variety of players including Jason Moore who started eight of Baylor’s nine games in 2020 at center. Moore announced in late December his decision to not play in the 2021 season despite having additional eligibly.

A Baylor legacy, Miller is the son of former Bear Fred Miller who signed with Baylor in 1991 and was eventually a three-time All-Southwest Conference pick on the offensive line. Miller was selected in the fifth round of the 1996 NFL Draft and went on to start 164 games during his professional career with the Rams, Titans and Bears.

If he's anywhere near as good as pops, what a great pick up for the Bears. Fred was a great player for the Bears.

I was surprised that Rhule and staff didn't seem to show that much interest when Miller was coming out of high school. Hindsight suggests that was an error in judgment unless he really wanted to go to Vanderbilt.

Based on his interview today and recruiting profile he was kind of a late bloomer. Only had a few p5 offers. Said he was 185 pounds and 5-8 as sophomore because of juvenile arthritis. Really grew developed and improved in college. Most or all of our ol prospects were more highly rated then him in high school. Half or more are gone now.

Fred got a Super Bowl ring with Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams, then played for the Tennessee Titans and then signed. 5 year $35mm contract to end his career with the Chicago Bears.
